Flimsy Fairy

Grace received the news that she had been given a council flat in a tower block in Blackburn. It was with apprehension she drove into town to view it. She got the keys off the council and made her way to the tower block. It was seven storeys high. She was on the fourth floor. The lift smelt of urine like the wards at Badger. She went in the flat and looked around. It had two bedrooms. She accepted the flat and ordered furniture. She had a big double bed in the main bedroom and a single bed for the spare room. She had decided to get a spare bed in case Mark insisted on staying over. She had bought leather furniture, easy to wipe down, a microwave cooker and a fridge freezer. It would be hard work having to cook when she got home from work. She was used to just nipping to the mess hall. She had bought rugs instead of carpets. Her savings wouldn't stretch to carpets. She looked around and realised she had forgotten to buy curtains. She would have to wait until next month's pay check. She hadn't realised how expensive it would be, furnishing a flat. She looked at the floor. She hadn't bought a vacuum cleaner. For now she would have to use a dustpan and brush. She flopped on the couch and turned the television on. The news was incredibly boring. It was all about people getting stuck in the snow. She wondered if she'd be able to get into work in the morning. They didn't grit the winding country lanes that led to Badger. She poured a glass of brandy, lit a cigarette and put her feet up on the table. All of a sudden she heard shouting coming from next door.

'Let me go' said the voice. 'I want to go back to Badger.'

What's going on, thought Grace. She turned the TV off, emptied her brandy out of the glass and put the glass to the wall.

‘Fairies are bad’ said the male voice.

‘Yes, you can’t be a man and be a fairy’ said the female voice.

‘Oh God’ sobbed another male voice. ‘I’m a bad flimsy female fairy.’

‘Yes, you are bad. It’s bad being a fairy. Fairies are female. Now are we going to stop all this nonsense and take your frock off?’ said the female voice.

‘I can’t take my frock off. I’m a fairy. Oh God, I’m a bad female fairy’ the voice sobbed. 'I want to go back to Badger.'

Grace didn’t know what was going on but it was obvious someone was in distress. It was someone from Badger as well. She felt it was her responsibility to find out what was going on. Without even thinking she went racing next door and rang the doorbell. A man answered.

'Who've you got in there?' asked Grace. 'It's someone from Badger.'

'It's none of your business; we're from social services' he said.

The woman came to the door. 'Who are you?' she asked.

'Grace Donnelly, I'm a staff nurse from Badger Hospital' she replied.
