âWhat do you think?â Wyatt asked Jared, as Cliff and Nessy started off towards town.
âI rode as far as the valley at daylight and took a look. The town is located at an old waterhole. It's pretty much open at either end, with slight rolling hills to one side and a small range of mountains and the spring to the other.
Wyatt queried: âHow about patrols or sentries?â
âI didn't dare get too close. The town has a bunch of wagons and tents, plus a couple large structures â looked like rooming houses. There's other buildings and a two-story affair, probably the main saloon. At the outskirts, I saw a couple horses and their riders.â Jared postulated, âThey didn't appear to be camped out, but I'd guess they were keeping an eye for anyone headed their way. Probably another pair at the other end too. Be real tricky to enter from either side, being that it's a choppy range of hills over here and a wide open expanse of open ground for a mile on the far side.â
âYou and I will use the cover of the hills and take another look later this morning,â Wyatt said. âWe need to draw a sketch of the buildings and hope Cliff can remember which is which. Come time to act â providing Scarlet is there â we will need all of the information we can get.â
âAnother thing, Wyatt, we need to get eyes over at the east end of town. If Reese or Brett comes by train, they will come up from that direction.â
âShane can head over there,â Wyatt suggested. âWouldn't do for our kin to walk into trouble, before we could warn them. If they did come by train, they could be arriving at any time.â
Wyatt called Shane over. He had been tethering the horses where they could get a little grass. It was slim pickings around the hills, but the animals could also get a little from the sage and scrub-brush. The three of them talked over the options and Shane took the freshest mount and headed through the hills. He would be far enough away from town to avoid being seen and make his way a mile or so beyond Brimstone before turning toward the railroad. He packed enough food for the day and would return in time to be in camp by dark.
âI hate every second we delay going in after Scarlet,â Jared anguished, as Shane rode off. âI know we have to have a plan, but....â
He left the statement hanging and Wyatt added: âWe would be no good to her dead, Cousin. You know your sister wouldn't want any of us to get killed trying to save her.â
âIf anyone has touched her...â Jared groaned at the notion, then set his teeth. âI'll rip the beating hearts out of every one of them kidnappers and squash it under my heel.â
âDon't know where you got your temper,â Wyatt remarked. âGood thing some of us came along who are willing to use our heads.
