‘Well?’ Scarlet asked in a rather demanding tone, before Nash had even closed the front door to his doctor’s office. ‘Did you get a telegraph message from Reese?’

Nash winked at Trina, who was standing alongside his sister. ‘Do you think he’s the one Scarlet is dying to hear from?’

Trina giggled at his teasing, but Scarlet placed her hands on her hips and tapped her toe impatiently. ‘Did you get a wire or not?’

Her exemplary tone allowed Nash no further wiggle room. ‘I got a telegram – yes, – but not from Reese. It came from Brett.’

‘Brett?’ she queried. ‘Why is Brett sending his wire to you?’

‘Keeping you informed, no doubt,’ Nash replied. ‘I’m sure he doesn’t expect me to personally do anything about the situation over at Rimrock.’

‘Nash, dear,’ Trina got involved. ‘Don’t be so mean. You can see your sister is worried sick over this whole thing.’

‘Reese has a level head,’ Nash retorted easily. ‘He won’t let the guys get into any trouble they can’t handle.’

‘You don’t know that,’ Scarlet maintained. ‘Jared is with Reese now, and I gave my promise to a dying man. You know what that means.’

Trina turned her head to frown at Scarlet. ‘What does it mean?’ she wanted to know. ‘Anyone of good conscience would pledge their word to comfort a dying man. I’m sure the Mountie wouldn’t expect anyone to go outside the boundaries of our justice system to fulfill a promise.’

Scarlet smiled at Nash’s wife, a tolerant simper, as if the poor girl had missed the point of a poignant story. Rather than actually laugh at her ignorance, she took time to explain.

‘Growing up, Reese was busy doing the work of a ranch foreman, Brett pinned on a badge, and Nash here was constantly studying medicine. That left Jared to look after me and Wendy. He was several years older than us, but he has always been a very dedicated big brother.

‘One time, when I was about fifteen, a young ranch hand I didn’t particularly like took a shine to me. He often tried to catch me out alone and hounded after me constantly. I tried to put him off, but one day, he grabbed me and tried to force me to kiss him.’ She sighed at the memory. ‘I managed to escape his grasp – he didn’t wish to hurt me – but that was the last straw. I broke down and told Jared.’

‘I remember,’ Nash added to the story. ‘What was the guy’s name – Chad something?’

‘Yes, Chad Billingsly. He drew his time and left the ranch the very next day.’

‘He was my first broken-nose to deal with,’ Nash said. ‘I managed to set the bone straight and applied some tape. Didn’t much help his two swollen black eyes – those almost always come from a broken nose.’

‘Jared warned if he ever saw him again, he would do far more than punch him in the face,’ Scarlet reminded him.

Trina smiled. ‘It must be nice, having a brother who cares for you.
