âWell?â Scarlet asked in a rather demanding tone, before Nash had even closed the front door to his doctorâs office. âDid you get a telegraph message from Reese?â
Nash winked at Trina, who was standing alongside his sister. âDo you think heâs the one Scarlet is dying to hear from?â
Trina giggled at his teasing, but Scarlet placed her hands on her hips and tapped her toe impatiently. âDid you get a wire or not?â
Her exemplary tone allowed Nash no further wiggle room. âI got a telegram â yes, â but not from Reese. It came from Brett.â
âBrett?â she queried. âWhy is Brett sending his wire to you?â
âKeeping you informed, no doubt,â Nash replied. âIâm sure he doesnât expect me to personally do anything about the situation over at Rimrock.â
âNash, dear,â Trina got involved. âDonât be so mean. You can see your sister is worried sick over this whole thing.â
âReese has a level head,â Nash retorted easily. âHe wonât let the guys get into any trouble they canât handle.â
âYou donât know that,â Scarlet maintained. âJared is with Reese now, and I gave my promise to a dying man. You know what that means.â
Trina turned her head to frown at Scarlet. âWhat does it mean?â she wanted to know. âAnyone of good conscience would pledge their word to comfort a dying man. Iâm sure the Mountie wouldnât expect anyone to go outside the boundaries of our justice system to fulfill a promise.â
Scarlet smiled at Nashâs wife, a tolerant simper, as if the poor girl had missed the point of a poignant story. Rather than actually laugh at her ignorance, she took time to explain.
âGrowing up, Reese was busy doing the work of a ranch foreman, Brett pinned on a badge, and Nash here was constantly studying medicine. That left Jared to look after me and Wendy. He was several years older than us, but he has always been a very dedicated big brother.
âOne time, when I was about fifteen, a young ranch hand I didnât particularly like took a shine to me. He often tried to catch me out alone and hounded after me constantly. I tried to put him off, but one day, he grabbed me and tried to force me to kiss him.â She sighed at the memory. âI managed to escape his grasp â he didnât wish to hurt me â but that was the last straw. I broke down and told Jared.â
âI remember,â Nash added to the story. âWhat was the guyâs name â Chad something?â
âYes, Chad Billingsly. He drew his time and left the ranch the very next day.â
âHe was my first broken-nose to deal with,â Nash said. âI managed to set the bone straight and applied some tape. Didnât much help his two swollen black eyes â those almost always come from a broken nose.â
âJared warned if he ever saw him again, he would do far more than punch him in the face,â Scarlet reminded him.
Trina smiled. âIt must be nice, having a brother who cares for you.
