Valen stopped in the hallway. He heard Laura answer the buzzer. Her emotions spiked when she answered. He needed to assess the threat and remove it if necessary.

He was surprised by the well-dressed woman that approached the door. She wasn’t psychic. Her soul was shallow but wasn’t violent or threatening. She was inconsequential. He was about to exit the building when Jenner walked in.

Jenner stopped, looking around the empty room. His psychic ability was low in comparison to Laura but his instincts were excellent. He sensed the predator in the room. He put his hand to his weapon before running up the steps. Valen knew he was going straight for Laura’s apartment.

He should go home. He had no reason to stay yet his demon was uneasy despite being satisfied by its intended bride.

Valen removed his fade and leaned against a post outside the building. Minutes later Jenner returned.

He walked up to Valen, anger written across his face. “What are you doing here?”

Valen straightened his stance. “I came to see Laura.”

Jenner’s fingers flexed. “She has plans.”

“Yes, she told me.”

“Stay away from Laura. She isn’t the kind of woman you play with,” Jenner snapped.

Valen’s eyes flickered. “I assure you I have nothing but respect for Miss. Whitney.”

Jenner glanced away. “Let me say this so you understand. Laura doesn’t believe you had anything to do with your brother’s murder. I however, am not convinced.”

“I was under the impression you had a suspect.”

Jenner’s hand rested on his gun. “No one has been implicated in Rico’s murder at this time.”

Valen straightened the cuffs on his shirt. “Not someone. A group. PURE.”

Jenner squinted. “You know about Pure?”

“Do you honestly believe that a fanatical group like this could make an attempt on the demon races without coming to my attention?”

“Demon races? How many of you assholes are there?”

“You have a lot of catching up to do Agent Davidson. I suggest you get to work.” Valen turned to leave.

Jenner grabbed his arm. “Stay away from Laura.”

Valen removed Jenner’s hand. “Laura explained this game to me.”

“What game?” Jenner snapped.

“War.”
