CHAPTER FIVE
By the Water
We reached my car, and I took out my keys. The car beeped and its lights blinked alive. Megan made a sound, immediately noticing the upgrade. âWell, Iâll be. Whereâs that red Corolla? You said youâd never trade it in.â
âItâs been ten years, Megan,â I reminded her. âI couldnât keep driving that rundown thing forever.â
Megan pouted. âPity. We made so many memories with that Corolla.â
I opened the passenger door. âWell, we can make new memories here, with this one.â I waved her in, but she shook her head, confusing me.
âNuh-uh, Lola Hanigan. You overdid the champagne back there, remember?â She stalked up to me until we were face to face. My heart is hammered wildly against my chest. âYouâre not driving,â she whispered, trailing her fingers down my arm. I shuddered, only just realizing that Megan had already snatched my keys.
âHey!â
Too late. Megan was already running over to open the driverâs door. She got in faster than I could blink. What the hell just happened? I heard the click of her seatbelt being fastened and I popped my head into the car, my car. âWhat are you doing?â I demanded.
âIâm driving.â
âBut you donât know how to.â When Iâd finally earned my license back in high school, it took me two weeks to try and teach her how to not run someone over.
âItâs been ten years, Lola,â she echoed. âIâm a big girl now. I can even drive a stick, you know.â She smiled at me confidently, and I just wanted to collapse into her and smoosh my mouth all over hers. Instead, my alcohol-laced brain had me toppling into the shotgun seat in the most graceless fashion. Megan laughed, and it was such a heavenly sound that I didnât care that it was at my expense.
âBuckle up, Lola Hanigan.â
We took off and Megan was true to her word, driving my Honda Accord smoothly. We didnât really talk that much. Awkwardness began to creep in, so I rolled the windows down to try and quell that feeling. The wind blew our hair about and she asked where we should go. I thought of the docks. Megan had always liked the boats and the water, so I wanted us to spend some time there. I gave her the directions, guided her turns, and pointed out new shops and cafés along the way.
When we arrived at the docks, we took a moment to soak in the scene. The moon was full, and the water was at high tide. A handful of boats sloshed around in the waters, anchored between the slips. The breeze coming from Hyde Bay was cool and salty. I breathed it in and gradually felt myself relax. Megan found a railing to lean against while she watched the glow of the dock lights reflect in the murky water.
I was beside her in a heartbeat, waiting for her to say something. When she didnât, I broke the silence myself. âMegan,â I started. âHow have you been?â
âLetâs see. Where did we leave off? Well, after high school, I went to Europe, right? Three months, I was there.
