CAM

Cam loved Maggie’s laughter. It felt like sunshine and sounded like music, so he made it his goal to make her laugh as much as he could. After their battle of cereal bowls, which he let her win, they made love on the kitchen counter, cuddled on the sofa, and napped in the afternoon sun.

Spending time with her felt unreal in the most perfect way. She was beautiful, intelligent, funny, adventurous. There wasn’t a thing about her that he didn’t like, and by the time she fell asleep in his arms again that night, he knew he was in danger of something far more serious than a crush.

He felt way out of his depth. He was terrified at the way his heart kicked painfully as she drove away early Monday morning. He’d never felt anything like this before, not even close. He’d been serious about one of his college girlfriends, but even the heartbreak Jeannie had caused him felt like a minute blip compared to the terror associated with losing Dr. Maggie Watson.

Knowing he should talk to someone, he quickly realized, with chagrin, there weren’t many people in his life he could really confide in. His friends were too shallow and though he hated the idea, the only people left were his family.

He sure as fuck wasn’t going to talk to Carter—Cam wasn’t even sure Carter knew what feelings were. He’d probably draw up a spreadsheet and call the board together for a decision.

He’d have to talk to Clara, and if that failed, he’d go to his father. Never his mother. No, Crystal Chase would have booked the Madison wedding planner before he got off the phone with her, and as much as Cam liked Maggie, he wasn’t ready for that.

Really, that only left Clara.

CAM: Can we grab dinner soon?

He slid the phone into his pocket without waiting for an answer. Clara would not be awake and ready to communicate until at least 11.

As he drove, he thought about how much he’d rather spend the time with Maggie, but they agreed to wait until Wednesday before they saw each other. She told him, rather cutely, that she couldn’t control herself around him and needed sleep to be able to function as a doctor. He figured that was fair enough, and if he wanted to be serious about his proposal and helicopter certification, he should rest too.

It didn’t mean he had to like it. The time until Wednesday evening seemed to stretch out before him into continuous oblivion.

Luckily, he had Wilson to keep him company. The kid was a bright light every morning, and Cam went from being ashamed to have to do community service to looking forward to it. It wasn’t just Wilson, he loved reading to all the kids and helping out wherever he could. It made him feel good. He hadn’t realized until now how little good he had done in his life.

“Cam.” Wilson waved happily from where he was coloring in his bed.

“Heya, champ.” He pretended to punch him in the arm, grabbed their novel from the nightstand, and brought a chair up.
