Erik sat in front of Hayley’s house in his car, the address book open on his lap. The pages were full of numbers, and addresses, and names, but there didn’t seem to be any particular order that Myron had entered them in.

It took fifteen minutes or so before Erik managed to track down Gregory’s phone number. He quickly realized, though, as he stared at the book, that the numbers were all incredibly faded, and likely had not been valid in a very, very long time. A good deal of the numbers probably belonged to deceased persons, too. How would he know if Gregory’s number was right or not?

Besides, even though Myron said that Gregory was still alive, there was no certainty that he truly was. If Erik’s math was right, Gregory would be almost ninety-one, and while Myron was still doing (relatively) well at ninety, there was no way to know how Gregory was doing.

Erik sighed, pulling his phone out and dialing the number. He started his car and pulled back onto the road, checking to make sure that no one was going to hit him. The phone rang, and rang, and rang . . . a sign that there was not a voicemail or answering machine connected to the number.

Erik was just about to give up hope when the phone clicked, and a young, female voice echoed across the line. “Hello?”

“Uhm, hi. Is . . . is Gregory Macray there?”

“Yes, he is, who is this?”

“Uh, my name is Erik Macray . . . I’m his great-nephew. His brother . . . Elroy’s grandson.”

The woman went quiet. If Erik hadn’t been able to hear her breath against the base of the phone, he would have assumed that she hung up.

Eventually, the woman began to speak again. “I didn’t know that my father had any brothers or sisters.”

That caught Erik off guard. Neither Myron nor Leroy had said anything about Gregory having any children, or a steady lover of any kind. “I didn’t know that Uncle Gregory had any children.”

The woman went quiet again for a moment before she said, “Listen . . . Erik, right? Dad is sleeping right now, but I can have him call you a little later, all right?”

“Okay. Thank you, uhm . . . ”

“Elyse. My name is Elyse,” she said before going quiet, although she continued speaking again a moment later. “Just so you know, Dad has some problems with talking to people, in general, and it seems to help him if you mention me or my brother, Tommy.”

“All right. Thank you.”

“You're welcome.” Erik pulled over to the side of the road and listened as the line clicked before dropping his phone down to his lap and tilting his head against the back of the seat. He could hardly believe that the number in Myron’s phone book still worked. Sure, Erik had taken the time to look for the damn thing, but never in a million years did he think that he was actually going to get a hold of Gregory Macray.
