Sunday afternoon I finished my review of the case and felt prepared to testify the next morning. Now it was time for a short nap before my evening with Emily. I didn’t want to be exhausted when we finally had our time together, and figured with a nap and a shower, I’d be as good as new. But as I lay on my couch, the TV showing an afternoon ball game and my air conditioner drowning out the sounds beyond my small apartment, my thoughts returned to Tammy Rae and the chippie case. She had been coy during our meeting, not sharing much about this case that may or may not have involved a chippie, saying she needed to get permission from the agent in charge before discussing it in detail. But she was going to be my contact on it from here forward, and Tony was out. I didn’t like that, and I didn’t understand the reason for it. I didn’t trust her one bit.

Soon my thoughts moved to Emily and the evening before us. Should I suggest we go to dinner first, order takeout, or skip food all together and open a bottle of something? Emily was different from my ex-wife, Val, and from Katherine, the shrink I had dated a short time before meeting Emily. She was different from all of the others I had dated throughout my many years of bachelorhood, and I truly believed this could actually work with her. It was as if I had finally found my soulmate, and I needed to try hard to not screw it up. It seemed I had just fallen asleep when a thud woke me. It sounded like a door closing, and it had either come from next door—Emily’s—or upstairs. I checked my phone and saw it was nearly five. Damn, I guess I really had been tired. I popped out of my apartment and went to Emily’s door, which now stood open. It made me wonder if she had closed it just to signal me that she was home. But an open door signified an invitation, a welcome, a cue that it was time to reunite and work things out.

She was dressed in shorts and a tank top, coiled into a corner of her couch with a book in hand. Her freckled legs were pulled up next to her as if she were warming herself, but it was ninety degrees outside, and she had her apartment opened up. Emily was always cold, and that was one problem she and I would always have to deal with. If there was to be an “always.”

“Hey there.”

“Hi.”

“How is your mom?”

She lowered her book. “She’s okay.”

I noted the shortness in her tone. “Good, I’m glad to hear it. Listen, I just woke up from a long nap and need to grab a shower, brush my teeth, change my clothes. I’ll be over in a few minutes, if that’s okay.”

A simple “okay” and a polite smile was all I received in return.
