Chapter Six

“Hello there! Might I trouble ye for a moment?” to voice called cheerily from over Ethan’s shoulder.

“Aye,” Ethan grumbled in response. Tessa’s looming departure had put him in the foulest of moods. He pulled the sword that he had been crafting from the fire and rested it on his anvil, not wanting it to overheat. “What business may I help ye with, Sir?”

“I’ve been told that ye craft rings and I find myself in need of one.”

“Aye,” Ethan said with a curt nod. “Have a seat and I’ll retrieve what I have,” he said as he motioned to the small wooden chair just inside the door of his shop.

Ethan walked briskly into his room and using the ring of keys that he kept tethered to his belt, he unlocked the chest that held the bits of jewelry that he had crafted. In between making swords, horseshoes and other useful weapons, Ethan created rings in the time that he could spare. He had grown a reputation for making them and often took requests from men in the village when they desired something special for the women that they loved.

He found the wooden box quickly and re-locked the safe, tucking the box under his arm. He returned to the front of his open-air shop and opened the box.

“Just what are ye looking for?” Ethan asked as he handed the box to the man. “If ye doona see what ye need here, I can make what ye desire. It would just take me a couple of days.”

“I’m afraid that I doona have a couple of days, so I’ll find something here that will suffice,” the man said as he dug carefully through the box, occasionally picking up one of the metal bands and holding it up to the light.

“Might I ask who the special lady is? Perhaps I could help ye choose?” Ethan asked, hopeful of making the sale of a ring but eager to get back to his work. He watched the older man, his hair grayed and thinning, the paunch of his belly overhanging his kilt.

He was taking too long and Ethan was growing impatient.

“Perhaps ye might ken her. She’s a local lass. The laird’s niece, Tessa Brodie,” Grant said casually and he lifted a small silver band from the wooden box.

Ethan coughed involuntarily. He felt as though his heart had suddenly stopped beating entirely.

Grant. This was the son-of-a-bitch that was planning to take Tess away.

“Is something amiss, lad?” Grant asked, puzzled by the shocked expression on Ethan’s face.

“Nay…I mean…nay…I’m sorry,” Ethan said as he cleared his throat and tried to compose himself. He felt as though his heart had just been ripped from his chest.

“Do ye ken the girl?” Grant asked.

“Aye. I’ve kent her most of my life,” Ethan said, trying to keep the icy chill from his voice. “Are ye no a bit old for her?” Ethan said harshly, regretting the words as soon as they had left his lips.

Grant chuckled. “A man’s never tae old tae find a young lassie tae warm his bed, if ye ken what I mean!”

Ethan felt rage boil up within him.
