CHAPTER NINE
My struggles with insomnia waned the more time James and I spent sharing a bed in the evening. Every night, my hesitation on the landing lessened, and every night, James and I spent a good deal of the evening tangled in passion before becoming absorbed in conversation afterward.
As was typical of the weather in England, some days were bitter cold, and the land would be graced with a dusting of snow. Others, the sun would shine, and it wasnât unreasonable to take a walk with your coat unfastened. It was precisely one of those days.
It was three days until the celebration of Yule and the time where I was expected to be present at my uncleâs. Iâd given Lillian some time off to celebrate with her family, and James and I had the manor to ourselves.
He ate his words when he saw I was indeed capable of taking care of ordinary routine and joined him in things he thought me previously ineptâcleaning, cooking, and, more importantly, chopping wood for the fire.
All sessions in court were postponed until after the holidays, and it was pleasant to have time at home with him.
That day, James convinced me the weather was perfect for descending the cliff to the Channel. The temperature was reasonable, and the sky was a rich blue, making promises of a decent day ahead.
As I dressed in a pair of buckskin breeches and a heavy cotton shirt, I couldnât help the smile that monopolized my face. Itâd been a long time since Iâd felt that content and happy.
While I was buckling a pair of heavy boots, James called from downstairs.
âIâll meet you outside, Nancy.â
Anything to get under my skin. He knew how much the term bothered me, and yet every now and then, he insisted on taking the piss.
With no intention of provoking him, I ignored his comment and continued to dress, hearing him go out the door.
It was too cold to go without a coat, so I searched for my fatherâs old hunting jacket made of worn leather and put it on.
Outside, I wandered to where James was perched on the cliffâs edge, taking in the view. He was a sight unto himself. Tall, broad of shoulders, and with an air of confidence I couldnât emulate if I tried. He was the embodiment of beauty, and when he turned to me upon hearing my approach, all I could do was gift him with a smile that came straight from my heart. The more days that passed, the more certain I was in the way I felt toward him.
âLook at you all ruggedly handsome. What did you do with my Nancy Boy?â
âKeep it up. Iâll toss you over the edge.â
James laughed and came over to peck a chaste kiss on my lips. âIâd like to see you try.â
Grabbing two fists full of his coat, I pulled him in for a much more desirable pairing of mouths before shoving him away again. âIâm going to ignore you, James, but Iâd keep your eyes peeled if I were you.
