Kip had been bored...bored...bored in the waiting room for nearly an hour while Marty and his dad were in the examination room. The Two Towers was, like everything else he valued, out at the campsite. He’d lucked out, though, and found a cool National Geographic article on South Pacific islands with a couple of great shots of native women.

His boredom and agitation grew all the more because, rather than going straight home and missing his appointment with Dr. Fielding, his father—after stopping at Laverdier’s to fill Marty’s prescription—decided to take them out for lunch in Portland. They parked on Exchange Street and had specialty sandwiches and Cokes at Carbur’s. Marty took his first pill at the restaurant, washing it down with gulps of ice water.

At the restaurant, Bill finally gave in to Kip’s nearly constant pleading to let him skip his appointment. It took a lot, but he had finally agreed because, after all, it was the second day of summer vacation, and Kip promised not to pull something like this the whole rest of the summer. Bill did make Kip call Dr. Fielding’s office and cancel.

On the way home, Kip, who was sitting in the backseat, kept teasing Marty about how he had been such a “brave little boy” at the hospital, and that maybe Dad should stop and buy him a special treat.

Marty scowled at his brother and, more than once, threatened him under his breath. “Just wait’ll this bandage comes off. You’re dead meat.” But Kip knew he was safe for now and didn’t let up until they pulled into the driveway.

Once they were home, Marty complained of being tired—either from the medication or just from the tension of being at the hospital—and went up to his room. He was asleep within seconds of hitting the bed.

Bill figured he had to make an appearance at the office. He was due in court in about as long as it would take him to drive back to Portland. He took a second to call work and tell them he was on his way in, but before he left, he asked Kip what his plans were for the rest of the day.

Kip was practically bursting with tension. The situation was playing out better than he could have expected. Marty would be sacked out, so he wouldn’t be looking for his knife, at least not for a while. As soon as his father was gone, he knew he would never have a better chance to head back to the caves, pack up his stuff, and strike out for parts unknown. There was still enough daylight left for him to get at least a couple of miles behind him before he had to set up the tent for the night.

“I’m—uh, I was gonna head over to Joey’s,” Kip said, hoping the edge in his voice didn’t give him away. “He’s got some new miniatures and wants me to help paint them.”

Bill stood in the doorway, jiggling his car keys in his hand. “Just make sure you keep it quiet around the house if you come back here.
