♠ ♥ Chapter 25 ♦ ♣
The early morning moonlight drenched the town’s streets with silver. Dalton crossed Main Street over to the Imperial, now dark except for two solitary lights, one at ground level and another on the second floor.
He shivered in the cool night air. Had he lost a part of himself in Dr. Richards’s house? The part that kept the rest of him warm at night?
Maybe he’d vomited it up along with all that whiskey.
One year left? That was it?
Then again, Dalton shouldn’t have been surprised. He’d lost seven or eight of his nine lives in the last year alone. He should already be dead, but somehow he wasn’t.
The consumption would do him in eventually—if the whiskey didn’t get him first. Or maybe he’d get popped in the back of the head by some vengeful gambler hellbent on getting his money back, like his uncle had suggested.
He should be so lucky.
When Nizhoni was alive, he’d hoped for a family, for a future. Now, without her, all of that had vanished with the blowing wind, swept away like a tumbleweed in the desert.
As he turned the doorknob to the boarding half of the Imperial, the unmistakable rustle of clothing immediately crackled from the shadows to his left.
Dalton ripped his revolver from its holster and aimed into the darkness.
Was it that faceless gambler, come to claim his vengeance so soon? Sick or not, Dalton would gun him down just the same. He had no intention of going down without a fight.
“Dalton,” a feminine voice said. “It’s me.”
He raised an eyebrow and let his gun barrel sink. “I can’t see anything. Who are you?”
A feminine form stepped into the light. Long brown hair, soft facial features, royal blue eyes, and a fantastic shape in an elegant sea-green dress, all of which he recognized from earlier that night at the Continental.
“Camille Warren.” He eyed her. “Just the kind of trouble I don’t need right now.”
“How are you feeling?” she asked.
“Never better. Why do you ask?” Dalton holstered his revolver.
“Come now, Dalton. You’ve no cause to be hostile. I’m not trying to get you in trouble.”
“Last time I saw you, everything in my life changed. Got shot three times and left for dead in the desert before your father even had a chance to get to me. Lord knows what would’ve happened then.” Dalton rubbed his shoulders.
“If you’re cold, we can go inside,” she offered.
“I’ll go in, but you oughta stay out here. Better yet, go home.” He reached for the door, but she grabbed him by the arm.
“I’m sorry about last year. I don’t know how my father found out, but it was probably some indiscretion on my part. I never meant to hurt you or endanger you.”
When Dalton looked into her eyes, his heart pumped faster. “That’s kind of you to say, Miss Warren, but—”
“Camille, please,” she said.
“If it’s all the same to you, I’ve had quite a rough night, and I’d like to get to bed.” Even in the moonlight, Dalton could see Camille blushing.
