Chapter Four

Julia

With my father’s gruff, “I forbid you to see him,” still ringing in my ears, I stepped backward just as Nolan opened the door and stepped inside. He looked so damn sexy. And so damn strong.

Biceps bulged and flexed as he shut the door and turned back to look at me. “Is everything okay? You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”

Don’t say anything stupid!

“My father...oh God, Nolan, you’re forbidden. I mean, he...he said...damn, where do I begin?” I couldn’t help the false starts. My mind was spinning, “Alicia’s father is a senior police officer. And a nosy son of a bitch. Anyway, he said you almost beat a guy to death.”

He had frozen when I said that Alicia’s father was a senior police officer. Now, he pinned me in place with those piercing blue eyes. “Fuck! I will never get away from this!” he growled and looked so damn pissed that I almost ran.

Instead, I studied his frown and then my heart skipped a beat at the anger in his eyes. Anger and something else...despair. I also saw that he had a scar across the top of his nose. I wanted to kiss it. My gaze dropped to his firm lips before they flew back to his eyes. He looked even sexier when he was angry. Another fierce growl forced my attention back on his anger.

“Did he tell you that my aunt’s boyfriend was high on meth and trying to kill her? If my aunt hadn’t died from the shock, I would have probably killed the son-of-a-bitch.”

My hands flew to my mouth when I remembered that part. Then, I blurted out, “Heart attack?”

He nodded and looked wretched for a moment. “I didn’t want to keep beating him. But he kept coming at me, Julia,” he said in a ragged voice. “I kept pushing him away. He’d lunge at her then. I tackled him and he started fighting me. And he was strong!” He shook his head and blurted out, “I just snapped. And then my aunt Jo collapsed.” When he covered his face with his hands and dropped his head back, I ran and hugged him.

“Oh, crap! Nolan, I'm sorry!” I felt horrible. So, he’d beaten the guy. Why hadn’t my father dug deeper? I already knew that my father knew all this information but any scar on a guy’s reputation started my father’s alarm bells ringing.

“You know what? I think I’ll just go,” he said. He dropped his arms to his sides and didn’t hug me back.

“I’d love it if you stayed, Nolan. I’m so sorry. I’m tired of being surrounded by judgmental people. It’s never ending drama, and I don’t care if my father forbids me. That’s just stupid. He’s ignoring so much and all because of his status. Fuck that!” In that moment, I felt empowered and independent, “I want to get to know you. I want to hear your side of the story, Nolan. Please stay.”

He made a little groan and looked down at me.
