New Beginnings

The light blinded my eyes for a few seconds as I stepped from the cavern. When my sight adjusted to being outdoors, I looked in all directions. I had opened a doorway, high upon a steep cliff face. From where I stood, on a small flat ledge, the rock fell sheer away, but what I saw before me was both intimidating and strange.

The level comprised a maze of three-dimensional forms and was not an ordinary landscape. A gigantic lattice of irregular shapes stretched outwards in all directions, for as far as my eyes could see. It was formed of strong wooden vines that intertwined, in some places, more than a dozen, while in others, a paltry handful. Each single one was thicker than my arm. How the entire edifice held its shape and failed to collapse was a mystery, and I believed it was born into existence by the realm creators themselves. I saw no ground in the distance below, and the sky was equally invisible, though I tried hard to find even a sliver through the twisting, turning structures that blocked it.

I looked at the nearest section before me and saw with dismay how difficult it would be to travel at a walking pace. The air was humid, and everything surrounding me was tinged with a slightly magenta colour. I saw leaves growing in places from the structure, but they also bore the same surreal hues as the vines. The entire lattice was beautiful, but dangerous.

I edged out along the ledge to look down, and the game menu activated.

Information has been unlocked. The location of the Level 2 Mystic is before the Statue of the Wyrebird on the Lonely Mountain.

The physical objects appeared before me, hovering in the air, and I retrieved them all. I placed the potions in my belt and the rations in the backpack. It never seemed heavier whenever I added more, and I thanked whatever controlled the world for that strange game phenomenon.

I withdrew the scroll containing the level two map from my tunic pocket and studied it hard. The script appeared changed from the last time I saw it, or perhaps I had not noticed before, but the lattice work was visible as faint lines covering the entire left side of the parchment. The symbol for the mystic’s location was in the same spot, but it was not within the vine forest. I had to get to the Lonely Mountain.

How can I reach it? How will Paya and Srey find it?

The plan had been to meet with the dryads at dawn, but now I saw how difficult that would also be.
