Chapter Thirteen
ESME
âLet your hands hover over your cards. Connect to each one of them. You should be able to feel and differentiate each cardâs individual energy. Breathe in and out. Remember that accessing the full potential of your power is not a race. Some of you are stronger than others. For some it will come easy, whereas others may need an amplifier to give them a boost. For example, most seers need to touch an object or a person in order to get a read. With that said, when you are ready to take the next step, nod when you feel something, anything,â Professor Adder says as he walks around the small circular tables we are using instead of desks in Tarot Class. The bright yellow tablecloths and comfy armchairs always remind me of the cliché fortune teller parlors. It's hard to take this class seriously when gauzy fabrics of orange, red, purple, and blue hang from the walls. All we are missing are crystal balls and oversized turbans assigned to us and weâd all be set.
The professor looks nothing like the class he teaches, ebony skin, hazel eyes, and silver hair cut in a low fade, smooth waves rippling across his scalp, behind black-rimmed glasses. His brown and red tweed jacket with leather patches at the elbows, and maroon corduroy pants give him serious scholar vibes. His ice white hair, similar to my own, is a dead giveaway of who and what he is. A Blue Mountain Warlock, just like me. But if he wants to keep his secrets then so will I. We both know males in my coven are pushed to leave, he is not an outcast, banishment doesnât taint him like it does me.
I shift in my seat, my insides churning from the constant barrage of emotions Iâm feeling. I look to my left where Sam sits beside me, his hands drifting over his set of tarot cards. His eyes wide and eager as he hangs on Professor Adderâs every word. The bond I now recognize as my connection to him is full of nothing but nervous and excited energy.
No, these emotions arenât his, theyâre Micahâs. I havenât seen her since Professor Bodin vanished with her wrapped in his arms this morning. But as the day progresses, the Tether between us has been filled with anger, rage, pain . . . so much pain. The despair is so potent I thought I was going to have to leave my Astrology class in search of her. I donât know whatâs happening, but it canât be good. I want to do more. I want to help her, to be there for her, like she was there for me. The best way I can do that is to tap into my magic and will it to give me what I need. She is the chosen subject my tarot cards are laid out for. I want a strong vision. I need to see.
I take a deep breath as instructed, letting
