CHAPTER TWENTY

Saturday, March 13

Why hasn’t Victor gotten back to me? ‘Arsehole,’ I say to the screen. At least the website’s still up. He must have found the second laptop and my credibility is still intact. So what’s his go? He can’t be planning to let me pose as Doc forever. My phone buzzes and I check it. Henry. He cancelled on me last night. He never cancels. He’s hoping to catch up for a chat. Interesting.

An annoying tapping breaks my concentration and I look around only to find a waving Dawny at the window, so I put down the phone and get up to open the door. ‘Morning.’

‘Have you seen the television?’

I frown. ‘Not yet. Why?’

‘That man in my freezer. They’re saying he’s missing. There’s grave concerns for his welfare.’

Had to happen eventually. ‘I’d say they’re warranted, wouldn’t you?’

‘I have to admit he was much prettier alive than dead. Who’d have believed he was fifty-four! Didn’t look a day over forty, I say. And a good-looking one at that.’

‘You should have seen him twenty years ago.’

‘That poor wife looked distraught though, didn’t she? That did give me a moment.’

I guess the idea that the less she knows the better is pretty redundant at this stage and I know she’s curious. ‘Dawny, the guy was a paedophile. He was systematically destroying his wife’s credibility to make her look incompetent so he could get sole custody of his daughter for his own sick enjoyment. His wife was distraught at the time. But it was a stressful situation. I bet lying to the cops is another one.’

Dawny’s mouth formed an O and she was completely silent for possibly the longest moment since I’ve known her. Then her mouth closed on a tight line and her head nodded. ‘I knew there had to be a good reason you killed him. I have to say I wouldn’t have had a bad moment if I’d done it myself.’

‘I didn’t kill him. I just happened to be there to help cover it up after some other guy did. Because of the bullshit he’d heaped on his wife no one would have believed she didn’t do it and she most likely would have gone to jail and left her daughter without a parent. I thought the simplest solution was to help her get rid of the evidence.’

‘And get rid of it we will.’ Dawny patted my hand. ‘You’re a good girl, Lexi. I’m going to bake you a pie. Apple or lemon meringue?’

‘Apple,’ I say. ‘Although …’

Dawny grins. ‘You make your mind up and let me know.’

‘Are you sure you have time? How’s your houseguest?’

‘Houseguest?’

I pull a face. ‘Dawny are you going to tell me it was just Desmond’s car that stayed over last night?’

A smile crept onto her face. ‘It’s been a while. Poor Desmond. It’s nice to have him round again. Hadn’t spoken to him for years before this! Wasn’t sure I could find him, to be honest. But a bit of calling around and he turned up.
