CHAPTER TWENTY
Saturday, March 13
Why hasnât Victor gotten back to me? âArsehole,â I say to the screen. At least the websiteâs still up. He must have found the second laptop and my credibility is still intact. So whatâs his go? He canât be planning to let me pose as Doc forever. My phone buzzes and I check it. Henry. He cancelled on me last night. He never cancels. Heâs hoping to catch up for a chat. Interesting.
An annoying tapping breaks my concentration and I look around only to find a waving Dawny at the window, so I put down the phone and get up to open the door. âMorning.â
âHave you seen the television?â
I frown. âNot yet. Why?â
âThat man in my freezer. Theyâre saying heâs missing. Thereâs grave concerns for his welfare.â
Had to happen eventually. âIâd say theyâre warranted, wouldnât you?â
âI have to admit he was much prettier alive than dead. Whoâd have believed he was fifty-four! Didnât look a day over forty, I say. And a good-looking one at that.â
âYou should have seen him twenty years ago.â
âThat poor wife looked distraught though, didnât she? That did give me a moment.â
I guess the idea that the less she knows the better is pretty redundant at this stage and I know sheâs curious. âDawny, the guy was a paedophile. He was systematically destroying his wifeâs credibility to make her look incompetent so he could get sole custody of his daughter for his own sick enjoyment. His wife was distraught at the time. But it was a stressful situation. I bet lying to the cops is another one.â
Dawnyâs mouth formed an O and she was completely silent for possibly the longest moment since Iâve known her. Then her mouth closed on a tight line and her head nodded. âI knew there had to be a good reason you killed him. I have to say I wouldnât have had a bad moment if Iâd done it myself.â
âI didnât kill him. I just happened to be there to help cover it up after some other guy did. Because of the bullshit heâd heaped on his wife no one would have believed she didnât do it and she most likely would have gone to jail and left her daughter without a parent. I thought the simplest solution was to help her get rid of the evidence.â
âAnd get rid of it we will.â Dawny patted my hand. âYouâre a good girl, Lexi. Iâm going to bake you a pie. Apple or lemon meringue?â
âApple,â I say. âAlthough â¦â
Dawny grins. âYou make your mind up and let me know.â
âAre you sure you have time? Howâs your houseguest?â
âHouseguest?â
I pull a face. âDawny are you going to tell me it was just Desmondâs car that stayed over last night?â
A smile crept onto her face. âItâs been a while. Poor Desmond. Itâs nice to have him round again. Hadnât spoken to him for years before this! Wasnât sure I could find him, to be honest. But a bit of calling around and he turned up.
