Blake glanced at his cell’s screen as it vibrated on top of his desk. Keren from Social Services. “Hi, Keren, how are you?”

“Good, Blake, and I have news I know you’ll be happy about.”

“Oh yeah? Do tell.”

“Well, I know you were concerned about making sure Joey Carmichael’s next foster home would be a safe and happy place for him, and I’ve found the perfect family for him. Trudy and Bill Davis.”

“Oh…” Blake knew his enthusiasm level must have sounded off, but the pang of disappointment that had hit his stomach wouldn’t let him sound any other way. “Oh, that’s, that’s good, all right,” he managed to add.

“Yes, they’re friends of mine, been married two years. I was Trudy’s maid-of-honor, as a matter of fact. They have a darling little house in a new development in West Covina. Trudy’s husband Bill has a good steady job with the city.”

“They have other kids?”

“No, Trudy can’t have children, sad to say. They mentioned adoption to me about a year ago. Anyway, I showed them Joey’s picture, and they can’t wait to meet him. I’m sure they’ll love him, and we won’t have to worry about him being mistreated anymore.”

“Well, he’s an easy one to love.” Blake told himself to get a grip and act as if he was pleased with Keren’s news, for despite his feeling of loss, really this was for the best. A married couple, stable, and ready to start a family. It was ideal, and he’d just have to get over the dismay of not seeing Joey again.

“He is, isn’t he,” Keren was saying. “Bill and Trudy will meet him later this afternoon and if it works out, we can begin the process. I can help speed it up so that he’ll soon be in a loving home.”

“Yes, that’s what he needs, a loving home.” He’d have had it with me and Alex, but I guess it just wasn’t meant to be. He sighed. “Well, thanks for letting me know, Keren.”

After saying goodbye and disconnecting the call, he sank back in his chair and tried not to feel let down by the news. Joey would be well looked after, of that he was sure, a much better environment for him than a busy attorney he’d only see for a few hours a day, spending most of his time in daycare or kindergarten. No, this was better.

I’ll convince myself of it in time.

Checking his watch, he wondered if Alex would be through with his meeting by now. Maybe they could meet for lunch. The evening suddenly seemed so far away before he’d see Alex.

God, when did I become so needy? Since meeting Alex again, that’s when. He picked up his phone and punched in Alex’s number.

“Hey, this is a nice surprise.”

Blake couldn’t help but smile on hearing the warmth in Alex’s voice. That warmth seemed to find its way inside Blake and his heart thrummed from it. Wow, I’m a goner, he thought.

“Hi, Alex. You available for lunch?”

“Can’t wait to see me, huh?”

Blake chuckled.
