Chapter Six

“Shouldn’t he pick you up if you’re going on a date?” Seamus asked.

Levi shrugged. “Probably. He wanted to, but I said no.”

“Why?”

“Because I don’t want to make things easy for him.”

Seamus laughed, and it was good to hear that sound. Levi had made sure to see Seamus as many times as he could since they’d gone on that first date. They were sitting on a bench in the park close to the coffee shop they always met at since the day was so nice, sipping on their coffee. Levi had a date with Dimitri later that day, and he’d told Dimitri he’d drive to the steakhouse where Dimitri had made a reservation. It would have made more sense for Dimitri to pick him up, but Levi didn’t want him to.

Like he’d told Seamus, Levi didn’t want to make things easy for Dimitri. He needed a way to get out of their date fast if things went as bad as their previous date had, and calling Alexis to come pick him up wouldn’t cut it. He also couldn’t help but be slightly wary about climbing into a car that belonged to Dimitri, even though it was brand new. Dimitri had said the mechanic he’d brought his totaled car to had said someone had cut the brakes, or something like that—Levi didn’t understand a thing about how cars worked.

What if someone did it to Dimitri’s new car while they were eating dinner? What if it crashed on the way to cete territory? Dimitri still didn’t know why someone had tried to kill him, so Levi wanted to make sure he didn’t get caught in whatever it was.

“You just want to be able to go home as fast as you can in case he’s as much of an asshole as he was last time,” Seamus teased.

Levi hadn’t told him about someone trying to kill Dimitri, and he wasn’t going to. Seamus already had plenty of things on his mind, and Levi wasn’t going to add more to it. “Exactly. I mean, not that it was satisfying to stomp out of the restaurant last time, especially with how nice the place was. You should have seen some of the scandalized looks I got. But having to pace the sidewalk and kick the ass of a man who thought I was easy prey sucked.”

“That, and you can’t wait to see the expression on Dimitri’s face when you drive away.”

“I was kinda hoping I wouldn’t have to, to be honest.”

Seamus tucked his leg under himself and turned on the bench so he could face Levi. “You think he really changed?”

“I hope so.”

“Because I’m the only other alternative.”

“That’s not why, and you know it. I like you a lot more than I like him.”

“Yet he’s the one you want to marry.”

“No offense, but while I love our friendship, I can’t see us married.”

Seamus shrugged. “No offense taken. I can’t say I feel anything different about the situation. You know I’m in this because my uncle wants me to.
