Jake knew something was up when he walked out to the student parking lot and saw a Haddon County patrol car sitting next to his red Corvette. Ted Shackleford was leaning casually against the front grill, a friendly smile on his ruddy face.
"Howdy, Jake," said the sheriff. "I was wondering if I could talk to you about something. Why don't we head over to the Dairy Queen and I'll buy you a milkshake."
"I promised Mom that I'd help her with the paper after school," said
Jake. He eyed the lawman with suspicion. "What do you want to talk about anyway?"
"About Mickey Wilson and what really happened out there on the riverbank."
Jake rolled his eyes in exasperation. "I already told you all I know. Why should I waste my breath again. You didn't believe a word of it before."
"Now, I never said that, Jake," said Shackleford. "It was just such a weird storyâ¦all that jazz about the black wolf attacking you fellows."
"It wasn't jazz! It was the God's honest truth. You saw the blood and those wild-looking tracks on the riverbank. And you saw firsthand how Mickey ended up. From what I heard, he was stripped clean down to the bone. And you have the gall to doubt my story?"
Shackleford ignored the disrespect in the boy's voice. "Now, just cool down, Jake. I do know something mighty peculiar happened out there that night, but I just don't know exactly what yet. Me and Deputy Freeman are still in the middle of our investigation and, I admit, you've been a big help to us."
"Then why are you still hassling me?"
The sheriff reached into the pocket of his khaki shirt. "I just need to know where Mickey got these." He held a plastic vial of pills in his hand.
Jake tried to look nonchalant. "What is it?"
"I think you already know what it i , Jake," said Shackleford. "It's anabolic steroids."
"No kidding," said Jake. "I thought it was Flintstones vitamins."
The sheriff's eyes hardened. "Don't get smart with me, boy. I'm just giving you an opportunity to help us outâ¦and help yourself in the process. I just want to know one simple fact. Who sold him this crap?"
Jake felt his heart begin to beat faster and hoped that it didn't show openly. "How should I know? Maybe he got it at the drugstore. He used to work there part-time, you know." He glanced around and saw students directing curious glances their way as they walked through the lot to their cars.
"Mr. Frazier doesn't carry these steroids in his inventory," Shackleford told him. "Now, I think you know what I'm getting at. I'm just giving you a chance to give me the answer before I ask you the question."
"I don't know what you're talking about."
"Dammit, boy!" the sheriff felt himself losing his temper and fought to curb it before he ended up shaking some sense into the teenager. "I want to know one thing and I want it straight. Did the Booker brothers sell this stuff to Mickey?"
"I don't know anything about that," lied Jake.
