THE DEATH OF A SIBLING
Like the death of a parent, the death of a sibling can also be a life-altering experience for a child. Sibling relationships inform a child’s understanding of how the world works and provide a context in which personality, preferences, social norms, and interactions with others are developed. The death of a sibling not only impacts a child’s daily life, it also impacts the child’s understanding of his or her sense of self and future. In addition, children feel the impact of a brother or sister’s death on their entire family and worry that their family is forever changed (Hogan, 2008). In this section, we discuss the strength of the sibling relationship, specific factors that impact that relationship, and how it influences a child’s grief after the death of a sibling. It is important to note, however, that there are a variety of types of relationships that siblings have with one another and that the information provided here are generalizations. There is no replacement for listening to a child express what his or her relationship with the sibling meant to the child and how it is impacting daily life.
