They haven’t missed a thing. Beds made, our clothes from San Diego hung in the wardrobes, house fully furnished, flowers on the coffee table and photos of Claudia, me and the children on the mantelpiece. ‘How the hell did you get these photos?’ This has become seriously spooky, like I am living in a parallel universe.

‘We raided your house in San Diego and also downloaded some from Claudia’s computer.’

‘Good to see we’ve got plenty of privacy, then. Do you think you could have asked first?’

‘No time for that. Okay, security arrangements. There is a recording device and video surveillance in each room of the house, including your bedroom. Alert buttons are in every room and security lights outside. When you enter the house at night, switch on the outside alarm. This will ring if someone enters the property, including the garage. We have a team on standby around the clock and they are only minutes away.

‘We will phone the house every morning at 7 am and you must answer the phone. If Claudia or you answer and there are people in the house and you are at risk, simply advise the caller they have the wrong number and we will be here within ten minutes. When Claudia takes the children to school and collects them in the afternoon, we’ll have a car with two agents monitoring the drop-offs and pick-ups.’ Even Jim is starting to flag. ‘If you want a day out, we’ll arrange a surveillance team to be with you. Any questions?’

‘Yeah. How long is this nightmare going to go on for?’

‘Until we’re satisfied you’re all safe.’
