The article about simulation surgeries, and in particular a case study from a hospital in Chicago about the separation of conjoined twins, fascinated Alexa

She’d glanced at the clock throughout the day, wondering how the simulation was progressing. The technology evolved quickly and the surgery intrigued her. She’d witnessed some as part of her course, but she’d never been involved with any, and certainly nothing like a simulation surgery to separate conjoined twins.

Flicking up her laptop screen, she ran some searches and read about the latest technology used to create three-dimensional models to mimic surgical conditions and some of the interesting surgeries performed overseas.

However, as she read, it did little to quell her thirst for knowledge. Instead, she grew more and more envious and restless, until she could take it no more. She slammed her laptop shut in frustration and spun her chair around to look at the view, and take a deep breath. She’d wanted to be here. She’d wanted to come back to prove to herself that she’d put the past behind her and she could move forward, successful in a new career.

The boats bobbed up and down on the harbour as the sun was setting. If this was part of moving forward, then why was the past pulling her back in? Dragging her back to the moment when her world collapsed? Had she made a mistake in returning here?

“Alexa?”

She swung the chair around slowly to find Dante standing in the doorway.

A smile crossed her face, pleased to see him, but quickly faded as he didn’t look like his normal himself. His broad shoulders slumped and his tanned skin appeared unusually pale.

He wore blue scrubs that sat perfectly against his frame, but more than that, he wore an expression of uncertainty, and perhaps even fear.

“Dante. How did the…” She paused when he ran his hand through his hair and looked at her despairingly. Something had gone very wrong. “What’s the matter?”

She stood and walked to him, placing her hand on his wrist.

His eyes moved to it and he stared at it for a moment, as if lost in his own world – as if he were shell-shocked.

“Is everything okay, Dante? The twins?”

He started, and his eyes met hers. “Of course, they’re fine. I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you. “Something came up during the simulation surgery.”

“Do you want to talk about it?” She ushered him through to the chair opposite her desk.

Silently, Dante slumped into a chair in front of her desk and pinched the bridge of his nose.

She leaned against her desk and watched him for a moment before taking the chair next to him. “Dante?” she asked as gently as possible. It was clear he wasn’t okay, but she wasn’t sure how to begin the conversation.

“It’s complicated. I found a bridge connecting the hearts, not just the lining.”

A bridge? A cold hand of fear crept around her heart and held it. That was a concern. “An atrial bridge, or at a ventricular level?”

“Atrial. It makes it more complicated than we thought.
