Mike and I have gone our separate ways. I consider myself to be a tough guy, but I must admit, I shed some tears after he disappeared out of sight. I'd been living and surviving on my own for the past few weeks, and I’ve been managing just fine, but now that I've spent time with another human being (and a pig) I’m already starting to miss the company of other people, or even other creatures that aren’t trying to kill me.

I woke up this morning, quite late. It was almost midday and I figured that I'd probably been asleep for at least fifteen hours. It was a little after 9:00 pm when I started to doze off, last night. I needed the sleep; the last couple of days had really taken it out of me. I'm a fifty-five-year-old man, and I just don't have the stamina I used to.

Mike was nowhere to be seen, but his belongings were still on the table, near to where we had slept, so I knew he was around somewhere. I could see that he had already opened some more beans and a tin of SPAM, and there were two cups on the table, both full of water.

I sat up and took a few gulps from one of the cups. The water tasted stale and slightly medicinal, which is practically what all the water I've saved and collected now tastes like. I took another gulp just as Mike appeared from behind the food counter with his arms full of bags of potato chips.

"For the journey ahead", Mike beamed. I hadn't seen him this happy since I'd originally agreed to help look for his family.

"Morning, Mike". I didn't sound quite as chirpy, but then I'd only been awake for about five minutes. I was also not looking forward to what I was about to tell him.

Mike dropped his haul of chips onto the table and then pushed them to the side. He then reached into his pocket and pulled out a Subway brochure. He placed it on the table and pointed to a simplistic map that was printed on the back, showing the rough location of this branch.

"Right, so we're here", he said as he tapped a red dot in the center. "If we want to go north, then our best bet is to head up to Stone Road, the A34".

I didn't want Mike to get all excited about his plan for the two of us, so I cut him off.

"Mike, I..." I hesitated as he stopped and looked at me. He already knew what I was going to say.

"You're not coming, are you?"

He looked disappointed, which was understandable.

"I had a feeling your heart wasn’t in it, last night when we talked, but I was hoping I was wrong", he added.

"I'm sorry, man", I said, beginning my weak excuse.

"I just don't want to embark on any long journeys at the moment. I’m relatively happy in that house of mine. Life was okay, you know?"

"I know", Mike said as he nodded.
