Power And The Force

The correspondence and the energy in Tarot card 1, “The Magician,” and principle one, “Desire,” of Think and Grow Rich , focus on getting clear on aims and gathering the proper tools to accomplish the venture ahead.

The theme of the primacy of mind comes forward.

Human power, of its own, is limited. Power comes from asserting direction to the energy of life that’s expressing. Power comes from harnessing forces greater than oneself, not controlling them. They are more powerful than we are. We cannot control them. We have the ability to harness them.

This is what Francis Bacon undoubtedly had in mind when he wrote:

“We can only command Nature if we are ready to obey it.”

Like harnessing the waters of a river to make electricity, we may direct it, but it follows its own nature.

Not that human want is a new phenomenon, but it is and remains a very useful motive power. When one comes to awareness of the discrepancy between what they have and what they want , and they have enough intelligence that the light dawns, that is when the Age of Innocence, the Fool, is ending.

Tarot Energies

Card #1 of the Tarot Major Arcana is “The Magician.” The magician is standing before a table with four holy implements, the wand, the cup, the sword, and the pentacle. Each of these stands for one of the four elements, as well as, by extension, the four square, and the four directions, north, south, east and west. And so the point is made, this is not about other worldly magic; this is about earth and humanity.

A lemniscate , the sideways figure 8, floats above his head. His belt is the auroboros , the serpent eating its tail. Both the lemniscate and the auroboros are symbols of infinity. They both represent the only way infinity can be represented, continuously cycling.

The power exists. The power is a cosmic power, which every awakened human can learn to harness and direct. That’s what the card shows. The archetypical magician is before the table, gathering his tools, taking instruction, practicing the steps, getting his act together, because that’s what it requires.

And in the same what that one practicing the guitar is simultaneously playing the guitar. The Magician already has the ability to direct the power.

Directing the power requires consciousness. It requires focus. This is acquired through graded, directed study, training, and practice.

An illustration will make clear the necessity for consciousness in the midst of forces larger than ourselves which can be harnessed.

Just because a strong wind blows, for instance, doesn’t mean it’s going to move a boat. On the other hand, if there is a sail sewed together the right way out of the proper tarpping materials, and that sail is cast the right way into the wind, then the boat will be propelled by the magnificent force of Nature, the wind.

The power that exists in the wind to move a boat exists whether the inventions of the human mind, the sail, is there to harness it or not.
