In the average American home, the TV is on for 7 hours, 40 minutes each day.

DOG’S BEST FRIEND

Higgins the dog (also known as Benji) was legendary for performing stunts on TV and in movies that no animal had done before. Who taught him every trick he knew? Frank Inn, the greatest animal trainer in history.

CUE THE DOG

One day in 1964 on the set of Petticoat Junction, a towering, snowy-haired man knelt beside Higgins, a shaggy Terrier mix sitting alertly at his side. “Okay,” the man said, “when the director calls, ‘Action!’ I want you to cross the room, take a piece of paper out of the safe, take the phone off the hook, pull the lamp cord out of the wall, and go hide in the car. Got it?”

The director called the scene, and the dog performed the sequence perfectly, with no retakes. The dog then headed for his “trailer,” a doghouse built to look like a Southern mansion, and sprawled out on a pillow to wait for the next scene. It was just another day at the studio for the world’s greatest canine actor, Higgins, and his legendary trainer, Frank Inn.
