‘Married?’ Mason’s eyes grew wider as he stared at Cassidy. ‘You… you’re gonna marry Ethan?’ He told me you were taking things one day at a time, and now you’re suddenly getting married?’

‘Eventually, yes. And I know this all seems like it’s happening way too fast, but… baby, if this is too much for you…’

‘Mum, it’s fine. Okay? It’s fine. I’m not saying any of this is straight in my head, or anywhere even close to that yet, I mean, this has to have been the craziest holiday I’ve ever been on, but…’ He shrugged, pulling himself up so he was sitting on the railings that surrounded the porch. ‘I’m just running with it now. After what I’ve had thrown at me, anything else is easy to handle.’

‘I know, but… I mean…’

He smiled at her, and Cassidy couldn’t help but relax slightly. ‘You’ve never been married, Mum. Was that because of me?’

‘Oh, God, sweetheart, no. No, of course not. I just… there just wasn’t anybody out there I wanted to share my life with, that’s all. I was happy with things the way they were.’

She looked at her boy. Her beautiful, handsome boy. He was, and always would be, the most important man in her life. But Ethan Everett was now running a very close second. The man she was ridiculously in love with. Mason’s dad.

‘I love him so much, baby. So, so much, and I…’ She reached out and took his hand, squeezing it gently. ‘I just hope that, one day, you find someone you love as much as I love your dad.’

‘Jesus, Mum, you’re sounding like someone out of one of those soppy movies you like watching.’

She couldn’t help laughing. ‘Yeah, okay. Maybe.’ She turned around and leaned back against the railings. ‘Anyway, listen to me. Ethan and I getting married, it’s a secret, alright? For now. Ethan’s throwing a party tomorrow night at his place to announce our engagement but, until then, not a word. I needed you to know about it because, well, if it wasn’t something you wanted me to do…’

Mason just raised an eyebrow, which made her smile again. ‘You’re not telling Gran?’

Cassidy looked down at the ground for a second or two. She felt a bit guilty about hiding this from Ava, but she knew if she told her then Ava would only try and talk her out of it, tell her it was happening way too fast, which it was. But Cassidy had wasted enough of her life. She was tired of sitting back and waiting. It was time to finally start living.

‘Your gran likes surprises. She’ll be fine about it all.’

‘You think?’

‘Please, Mason. Not a word, okay?’

‘Okay,’ he sighed, jumping down from the railings. ‘I can talk
