Chapter 12

Tyler

I stare out the window, watching Layton packing the last few things in Mia’s yard. Thankfully, no one was here when we arrived. I’d much rather still be out there with him loading up this truck than listening to the ring through the phone against my ear.

“Tyler?” My mom’s voice comes over the line in a whisper.

I sit in silence, unsure what to say or why I even made this call. I’ve put my mom through hell and the first time I call her in years is to ask her for a favor. It leaves a bitter taste in my mouth, but I know my mom will know what to do for Mia.

“Hey, mom,” I reply, finally swallowing my pride.

She audibly sucks in a breath. The weight of how I’ve treated her smacking me in the gut, full force.

“Oh, Tyler, I never thought I would hear your voice again. You haven’t returned my calls in so long,” she chokes out.

“I know, mom,” I tell her sincerely. “I’m sorry. I just—”

“I know what you think, Tyler, but you are not protecting me by cutting me from your life. You are killing me,” she cries.

Again, I say nothing. My throat is too thick to speak. The last thing I want to do is hurt her, but I’ll be damned if I can figure out how to stop.

“Tyler, what’s wrong? Do you need help?” she asks.

“I’m so sorry. I don’t know who else to call. I know it’s messed up to call you after all of this time for a favor, but you are the best woman I know, and I need a safe place for someone,” I say, keeping my emotions in check.

“You can always call me. I’m your mother. There is nothing I wouldn’t do for you.”

“Her name is Mia. She is seventeen and her family just kicked her out. She’s a nice girl, just a bit off track. I just don’t want her out on the street. It would destroy Claire if something happened to her,” I explain.

“Well, you know I have the extra space. Bring her over. She is welcome as long as she needs a place to stay,” she tells me. “And Tyler please, I am begging you not to cut me out anymore. What happened is done. That day was the worst day of my life and not because your brother lost his ability to walk, but because I feel like my other child died that day. The worst part is I mourn him daily, and he’s still very much alive. I need that son back, Tyler. I need you.”

“I know, mom,” I tell her. “I love you. I will be there soon.”

I hang up, chucking my phone to the ground before taking my frustration out on the steering wheel. I don’t know how long I sit there, but next I know, Layton is leaning across the center console, bear hugging me to stop.

“What the hell, man? What happened?” he says between breaths.

“Oh, it’s all great.
