Harriet

* * *

I see the photo as soon as I wake. It’s become some kind of obsession to scroll social media first thing in the morning. I’ve never hated the app more than I do right this moment.

Even though I told myself to let him go, what I know I should do and what I want to do seem to be warring within me. I don’t know how long I stare at the photo, zooming in to try to pick apart the woman in the picture. But she is beautiful, and honestly, it isn’t her fault that I got tangled up with Pacey. If anything, I am the devil in their story.

Then I see the diamond glaring at me on her ring finger. Scrolling down, I check the other photo. No ring.

Did he propose to her? Is that . . . am I . . .? I feel like I’m losing my mind here, overanalyzing every single conversation I’ve had with him and comparing it with what I see in front of my face. If Kennady and I were on speaking terms, I would call her and ask if she knows this girl. But we haven’t spoken more than a handful of words since that evening at her apartment.

My phone rings, startling me. I don’t recognize the number, but it’s local, so I answer.

“Hello?”

“Hi, can I speak to Harriet Banks, please?”

“This is she. How can I help you?”

“Oh, perfect. I was wondering if you had any availability for a custom photo shoot the weekend of the 13th?”

“I believe so. Can I place you on hold for just a moment and check my calendar?”

“Of course.”

Muting the conversation, I pull up my calendar and double-check the date even though I know I don’t have anything scheduled. A fact I had been worrying over relentlessly for the last few weeks. It’s been a rough few months.

“Okay. It looks like I’m free that weekend. What do you have in mind?”

“Oh, yay! That’s great. Pacey showed me your page, and I just knew you would be perfect for the job. Your work is phenomenal.”

My heart lurches in my chest when she mentions Pacey’s name. The same way it does any time I think his name or see something that reminds me of him. But this morning, it hurts a little more.

“So, we’ve rented out the Winter Park Resort in Colorado for engagement photos. We will provide a room, and all amenities will be paid, including flight and car rental.”

Engagement photos. Engagement photos. Engagement photos.

Those two words play on repeat in my mind. Over and over. The image of the gorgeous brunette with a flashy diamond ring flashes before my eyes. I don’t hear the rest of what she says. I can’t focus. This is the woman in the photo, and Pacey told her I was a photographer. She wants to hire me to take pictures of her engagement.

I mumble a few yeses and then rattle off my email when she requests it.

She knows. She has to know.
