* * * * *

I leave the room half hour later, Sahara settling down for a nap. Daniel's at the nurses' station, his scrubs traded for faded jeans and a sleeveless shirt. Guess it's hot outside. Guess he's going home.

"Yes!" He waves his keys at me. "Found 'em!"

"Uh." I don't know what he expects me to say. "That's good..."

"Yeah, isn't it? I was getting kind of fed up with crashing in the on-call room. But I'm always losing stuff, my house keys especially. That's why I don't keep goldfish anymore..."

"I...guess I'll never ask you to hold onto my money."

"That's a good idea."

Now what? He's just standing there. And so am I. I get the feeling I should say something--but--

"Sahara's surgery...uh...will you be there during it?" I ask.

"Who, me?" Yeah, you. "I'd like that, but I can't. I'm not a scrub nurse."

"A what?"

"The nurses they let into the operating room?"

"Oh."

I scratch my wrist. Don't know why. Guess I just want to remember my arm's still there. It's weird, though...I don't feel my nails gliding against my skin. And why hasn't Daniel left yet? His eyes bounce all over the pediatric ward, never settling on any one place.

Eyes. Green eyes. Pupils ringed in gold.

Gold spires in a sea of green.

Pillars of Creation.

Oh, shit.

"Hey," Daniel says. "Do you want me to walk you to your--"

"No."

"Oh." Looks surprised. "If you're sure--"

I can't even answer him. Just turn around. Just high-tail it to the elevators.

Can't deal with this shit. Can't. Got enough on my mind.
