Chapter fourteen

XIV

"W e have the antidote now," said Becca as we walked. "Why waste time going to see the witch? Let's make haste to save Bryn!"

Becca was excited, and her face glowed with accomplishment, but there was an underlying worry for her friend.

"Who is Bryn?" said Gwane unemotionally.

"She is our friend, and she was poisoned," I said. "She is a day and a half journey to the south-east."

"How many potions or ethers do you have and magical tents? How many do you have?" Gwane asked.

"None," said Becca.

"Well," said Gwane, taking his cap off. "Good luck to you. But these hills are full of monsters. You are lucky to make it here. I'll not be going with you unless we get more potions."

"My friend is ill and possibly dying," said Becca.

"Well, if you want to be able to take that antidote to her, you had better replenish your strength, healer," said Gwane.

"He's right," I said. "And we could use your help, Gwane."

"Why should I help you more than I already have?" Gwane asked.

"Gwane, you don't know it, but you are my best friend," I said.

"You don't look like a mystic, but you talk like one, stranger," said Gwane.

"A mystic?" I chuckled. "Gwane it's me!"

"So you are," said Gwane, rubbing his chin and staring at me. "We have a few hours of daylight to make it to El Maria's. We best keep moving. The monsters at night are worse. Are you going with me or not?"

I looked at Becca sincerely and raised my right hand, motioning her.

"Okay, dark mage, we will go to the witch with you," said Becca. "But your evil ways won't fool me."

"Good, we are all agreed," I said. I could feel the animosity between Becca and Gwane, and it was a little funny to me.

As we walked toward the witch's lair, two imps attacked us. They were no challenge to the three of us. I Got a critical on the first one who charged and Gwane cast fire on the second one killing it. We gained more experience points and a few gold coins. Becca looked annoyed that she didn't have a chance to attack any of the goblin imps.

"Good job," said Becca, sounding frustrated.

"Thank you," said Gwane. "If an imp has ever stabbed you, you could appreciate it not happening to you again."

"I have and thank you!" said Becca, sounding proper and annoyed.

"Thanks Gwane," I said, shaking my head at both of them. We walked for several hours without being attacked and finally we came to the home of El Maria.

Her home was an isolated thatched hut near the mountains. We saw the smoke rising from her chimney and I felt relief at the smell of it. She must be a powerful witch to live in the midst of such monster infested land.

" No tricks, black mage," said Becca.

"Do you expect me to turn you into a frog, or a lizard, after I saved you from the wolves?" Gwane asked.

Becca sneered at him.

Gwane entered the witch's home first, and we followed behind him.
