Nate didn’t dwell too deeply on the fact that he was driving around the Five Families neighborhood looking for Kinley’s rented house early the next evening. He hadn’t had to be Sherlock Holmes to get the address—a call to Hunter had been sufficient—and now he was sitting in front of her place, wondering if she’d let him in if he knocked on her door.
He also wondered what time a two-year-old kid went to bed. He put his head forward on the steering wheel. It wasn’t like him to be indecisive.
But the kid had thrown a monkey wrench in his plans.
Rekindling things with Kinley was one thing. He had been fairly confident that a summer affair would suit them both. But not now.
He saw the front porch light come on and the curtains move in the front window. Now he looked like a creeper sitting out here. He opened the door to the cab of his truck and hopped down, walking up the front path toward the door.
He hit the doorbell and stood back to wait. He wasn’t standing there long before it swung open and he found himself staring into Kinley’s warm brown eyes. She wasn’t wearing any makeup and had her hair pulled back in a ponytail, with only a light fall of bangs hanging down on her forehead. She had on a pair of leggings and a sleeveless T-shirt that fell to her thighs. Her feet were bare and next to her was a little girl in a matching outfit with the same red hair. But her eyes were blue. A beautiful light blue that seemed to sparkle.
“Hello, cowboy,” the child said.
“Hello,” he replied, stooping down so he was on eye level with her. She smiled at him, her grin just as sweet as Kinley’s. “I’m Nate.”
“I’m Penny,” she said, holding out her hand.
He shook it carefully before standing up. “Sorry to drop by without notice,” he said. “Work has been keeping both of us busy, but I wanted to see you.”
“Work has been crazy lately. What did you want?” she asked.
Penny kept staring up at him. He wondered what it was that she was staring at, so he took off his Stetson and held it out to her in case it was his hat.
She started to reach for it, but Kinley stopped her. “What are you doing here, Nate?”
“I missed you. I regret the way things ended the other night, so I thought I’d stop by and apologize—damn—I mean darn. I do that a lot with you,” he said. It was true. She seemed to be the one woman in the world who could rattle him with little effort.
“I think we both are to blame for the other night,” she said. “We are baking cookies. Would you like to come in and help us?”
He looked down at Penny, who was smiling and nodding up at him. “Mama is making horsey cookies.”
“I’d love to help,” Nate said.
Penny reached for his hat again, and he let her have it.
