out to your carriage in an appallingly public display...Yes, I should say you made a wrong decision.” Sir Adrian leaned forward. “You may well have ruined everything.” The stark truth of that statement only added to the regret that weighed on him. “I will make it right, Sir Adrian.”

“I warned you, Devingham, and Foxworth warned you. Your wife is distracting you from your assignment. She is a liability.”

Simon met Sir Adrian’s steely gaze, his own will unyielding where Lucy was concerned. “She is my wife.”

“I have a wife, too, but Eleanor is content to reside in Sussex with the children. I thought that was what you intended as well.”

“It was. Originally.” “Originally? But not now?” Sir Adrian rose and moved from behind his desk. “You’d best explain, Devingham, for I will allow nothing and no one to interfere with this project.”

“You know why I married in the first place.”

“Yes, yes.” Sir Adrian slashed a hand through the air. “To discourage the matchmaking mamas from setting their sights on you. And your duty to your line, of course.”

“I have responsibilities beyond what we do.”

“You do, but many of those responsibilities are to the future, not to the present. In the present, Isabella Montelucci, former mistress to one of the deadliest assassins in France, is in possession of information that will cost men their lives. And we have to retrieve that information and save those lives.”

“Antoine LaRue is dead. We are not dealing with him, we are dealing with a woman.” Simon rose so that he and Sir Adrian stood eye to eye. “I have not given up. I will get that list from her.”

“How? You walked away from her last night. I was watching her, and if looks could kill, there would be a dozen daggers in your back.”

“I didn’t say it would be easy,” Simon muttered.

“Then again, clearly her passions are engaged.” Sir Adrian narrowed his eyes in thought and turned away to pace to the mantel and back. “We have tried every other avenue. We have searched her home to no avail. Our informants know nothing about her. The woman we had placed in her home as a servant was discharged.” He sighed. “Other men have failed to hold her attention.”

“Other men? You have tried this before?”

“Of course we have tried this before.” Sir Adrian sent him a look of patronizing disbelief. “We have tried sending women to befriend her and men to seduce her ever since she surfaced in Europe, and we discovered who she was. We would have charged Foxworth with the duty once she arrived in England, but since the accident...”

Guilt churned like bad porridge in his gut. “So that left me.”

“That left you. With Foxworth’s encouragement and your title and fortune as lures, we hoped you might be successful.

And you have been—far more than any of your predecessors.”

“But—”

“But your wife is in the way,” Sir Adrian said with a sharp thrust of a finger. “Get rid of her. Send her back to the country where she cannot endanger our plans.
