After this warm welcome, we look at each other and shrug, then head for the room.

The room is small but clean. A double bed sits in the middle of it, and a window with the curtain pulled aside looks out over a backstreet. There’s a handbasin in the corner and a couple of thin white towels beside it. According to the instruction sheet, there’s a shared toilet and, separately, a shared shower further along the corridor. Luckily there’s a TV in the room, with a movie streaming service available.

“This is what you get for 1-star in Germany,” says Shannon looking at the bed. “Lucky neither of us is overly big – that bed looks kind of small.”
