Most of the girls in Marycrest are white except for Rosa, a gorgeous Puerto Rican girl; Belinda, a cool, lanky black girl; and Shirley, a petite black girl who’s an incredible painter. One of the nuns is black, Sister Betty. She plays the guitar. I wonder if she has a thing with Sister Helen, the Physical Education teacher. Sister Betty giggles like a schoolgirl whenever she plays basketball with Sister Helen, who runs and dribbles like a teenage boy in her Converse high-tops, her scapular of Jesus flying as she shoots and scores. Now I understand why these nuns are so obsessed with L shapes. Some of them are bent. (Jack calls homos “bent.”) My eyeballs bend toward Belinda, who is extremely fine.

I adapt to life here, quickly stepping in line with the regimen, including the school marching band. I’ve taken up the clarinet. After finishing KP duty on the dishes, I usually race over to the practice room to work on the clarinet parts for the Sly and the Family Stone song “M’Lady” from memory. That solo part is murder! The Marycrest marching band truly sucks, but we try. Reading music reminds me of math, so I learn the parts from memory. Who on earth would be musically inspired by the likes of John Philip Sousa? We’re allowed to listen to only approved musicals on the record player after dinner. The pickings are slim but many are songs I’d sing with Kitty sometimes, songs from Oliver!, The Sound of Music, and South Pacific. She loved musicals. Aside from our brief rec periods after supper, the silence at Marycrest feels more like a convent than a home for delinquent girls. Inside the dorm, school, and chapel, it’s always extremely quiet. The nuns won’t stand for what they call idle chatter. At least they like music.
