Dana pulled up to the netball park with Tully beside her, for the first time, she wasn’t looking forward to coaching her under elevens. With a sigh, she grabbed her netball bag from the back seat and watched as everyone headed into the stadium. The previous game was still going. Most of the courts were in use. A few of the older teams were practicing on the empty courts. A few kiddos playing by themselves too. She caught sight of Grace’s car a little closer to the action than hers. And her mum’s.

“Come on, let’s get in there or we’ll be late.” Dana paused. “It’ll be better than last time. There’s so many people there today.”

Tully shook her head. “That’s usually worse. It means there’s so many people who will notice me.”

“Nobody is going to notice you. This is Solomon. Nobody is expecting a celebrity,” Dana promised.

“Well they weren’t until word got around that I was staying with you. I hate small towns,” Tully complained.

Already they were at the gate. “You can wait in the car if you want,” Dana suggested.

Tully shook her head. “No, you’re my outback guru. I trust you.” The woman at the ticketing booth paid them no mind, letting Dana and Tully pass without even bothering to check Dana’s coach’s pass.

“Come on, we’re on court twelve, it’s down the back.” Tully followed, at a brisk pace. Nobody stopped them on the way to court twelve, and none of the kids who were circled around Grace at the sidelines paid much attention either, not even the usual amount of attention they paid to Dana because they thought she was cool.

“Hey kiddos,” Dana said, dropping the bag at her feet.

“Daannna,” a chorus of hellos and heads turned.

“Hey kiddos. The task master has arrived, which means it’s time you lot do your warmup. Off you go.”

A few kids complained. “A lap of this row!” Dana told them. That ought to be enough to get them out of trouble for a few minutes.

She noticed a few of the parents tossing glances to Tully, but none made any move to come and say hi, except Liv’s mum, the woman from the visitor center.

“Hey, just wanted to let you know, Liv won’t be at next week’s game. We’ve got to head down to Adelaide for the weekend. Jaden’s getting a few tests done.”

Dana nodded. “Oh no, how is Jaden?”

The woman sighed. “He’s… okay. Mostly. He’s a happy kid, but they think he might have autism. He hates the netball stadium, so my husband is home with him.”

Dana nodded understandingly. “That’s tough. No worries about Liv though. Thanks for letting me know.” The woman nodded and retreated to the group of parents.

“How’s things?” Grace asked, sidling over to them. The game before theirs was wrapping up, though Dana had no idea who was winning.

“We went to breakfast,” Dana told her sister.

“And?”

“It was nice,” Dana couldn’t keep the smile off her face.

“I’m right here,” Tully reminded them.

“Yeah, but we’re talking about you, not to you,” Dana said, smiling.
