Chapter Seventeen

Jody was dimly aware of Tia returning at some point in the night and registered that she wasn’t alone. She could hear Tia’s over-elaborate attempts to whisper quietly that somehow managed to be the same volume as if she was shouting.

When morning came, Jody snuck out quietly to get herself a bowl of cereal and a cup of coffee. She took them back to bed, and when she finished, she snuggled back under the covers. Asha’s scent still lingered, and Jody buried her face in the pillow, trying to recapture some of the pleasure from the night before.

She fell back to sleep and awoke a few hours later, feeling groggy and disorientated. She got up and went out into the living room.

Tia was sitting on the sofa in what Jody referred to as her sexy pj’s. They were silky and expensive and a million miles away from the baggy T-shirts and shorts she normally slept in. Sitting next to her on the sofa was Marco, playing on Jody’s game console.

“Morning babes,” Tia said, smiling sleepily at her.

“Morning.” Jody sat on the other side of Tia and put her feet up on the coffee table. She looked at the TV where Marco was steering a racing car around a particularly tricky bend, a bend where Jody always crashed into the barriers. Marco navigated it with apparent ease, and she felt a spike of irritation.

“So,” Tia said, “How was your evening with Chatty?”

“Don’t call her that,” Jody snapped. “She’s got a name, for fuck’s sake.” She felt like an open wound, raw and painful to touch.

Tia blinked and then held up her hands. “Okay,” she said in a conciliatory tone. “Sorry. Asha. How was your evening with Asha?”

Jody leaned back against the sofa and closed her eyes. “I don’t know.”

“You don’t know?” Tia echoed. “What do you mean? Did you have a good time?”

“Yeah, I guess so.”

“How long did she stay?”

“She left about midnight, I think.”

“And was there any action?” Jody opened her eyes. Tia looked at her face and grinned broadly. “No way. You shagged her?”

“I think it was more like she shagged me,” Jody said.

“Same thing.” Tia punched her playfully on the arm. “Well, that’s a result, ain’t it? You fancied her, and you got her into bed. Nice one.” When she didn’t respond, Tia leaned forward and looked into her face. “What’s the matter? Was it crap sex?”

“No. I just don’t know how she feels about me.”

Tia made a disbelieving noise. “She had sex with you. She must like you.”

“I don’t know.”

“Oh, don’t be daft.”

“It ain’t daft, darlin’.” They both turned to look at Marco, who never took his eyes from the screen. “Sex and intimacy ain’t the same thing.”

Tia looked at him as if she had never seen him before. “You what?”

“Jody is asking what this girl feels for her. And those feelings can be entirely separate from sex.”

In the silence that followed this statement, the only sound was the revving and screeching from the racing game. Tia blinked rapidly a few times and turned back to Jody.
