On the ferry, Mark takes the kids to get popcorn and I excuse myself to find Caroline. My stomach twists every time I think about the fact that Trista isnât here.
âThere you are,â Caroline says, finding me on the stairwell leading to the upper deck. âPete is with Mark and the kids.â She gives me a hug when we reach the top of the stairs, the wind whipping at us as we step outside.
âYou look great,â I tell her.
âThanks.â She grins. âI actually wanted to talk to you about that.â
I laugh. âAbout how great you look? Youâre crazy, Caroline.â I shake my head. Her face is so bright. Glowing. âOh shit, are you pregnant?â
She claps her hands together. âYes! I am. Crazy right? I mean itâs still early, only eight weeks, but we heard the heartbeat and everything. Itâs like, really happening.â
âWow, thatâs amazing,â I say, knowing her and Pete have been trying for two years. Sheâs only thirty-one, two years younger than me, so she said she wasnât worried yet about it taking a while. But she is so ready to start this phase of her life.
âThatâs why I wanted to talk to you,â she says, leading me to a row of chairs on the deck. âNot about the pregnancy, but about motherhood.â
âWhat do you mean?â No one ever asks me for parenting advice, but maybe now that my family is growing she sees me in a different light. Less a mess and more a master.
âWell.â She rests her hand on mine. âItâs just that now that Iâm going to be a mother, too, I feel like itâs my duty to say something. Talk about the thing no one else wants to say.â
I shake my head, not following.
âLook, I know you love Betsy, but whenever Iâve been with her the last few months, she seems to be closing herself up more and more.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âYou know how she struggles with friends, I know you do. But with Holden living with you, it seems to make her more anxious than ever. Jumpier. Less free.â
I stiffen at this line of conversation.
âI know Iâm not an expert on Betsy--â
I cut her off. âRight, you arenât.â
âMaybe not, but I know she is hurting, Em. And it started when that boy came to you.â
âWhen you say âthat boyâ, are you referring to my son?â I ask, my heart pounding, my eyes tight.
âThatâs the thing, he doesnât have to be. You can be the mom you always wanted to be if you put a stop to all this,â she says.
I gasp, incredulous. âAre you kidding me right now?â
âNo, Em. Iâm not. I know you donât want to hear this, but itâs my job as your friend to tell you what everyone is thinking. What everyone is too scared to say to your face. Youâre making a mistake.â
âA mistake? You think Holden is a mistake?â Tears fill my eyes, anger blooms in my chest. âHe may have his flaws, but so do I, Caroline. So do all of us.
