Chapter Six

“I think we should hightail it out of here.”

Viridian looked up from the dishwasher he’d been loading. It was like trying to play Tetras. He used every available space he could find to fit the second load on both racks.

He’d been told that he didn’t have to do the dirty dishes, that someone else would get them since he’d cooked, but Viridian liked spending time in there and was starting to consider the kitchen his domain.

He’d even rearranged the cupboards and pantry the way he wanted it.

“What’re you talking about?” he asked his cousin as he closed the dishwasher door. It wouldn’t snap shut at first, but Viridian put a little hip power into it and smiled when he heard the latch catch.

“Open your eyes, Viridian.” Peanut sat at the table and grabbed an apple from the basket in the center. How was he still hungry after the big breakfast Viridian had made?

“My eyes are open,” Viridian said. “How do you think I was able to load the dishes?”

“I’m not talking literally.” Peanut sniffed the apple before taking a bite then proceeded to talk with his mouth full. “You were shot. As fancy as this house is, and as nice as the guys seem, most of them, they can’t protect you. We need to start acting defensively. Go on the lam, never staying in one spot for too long. That’s how we stop Solo from killing you.”

Viridian grabbed the container of cleaning wipes to disinfect the counter. “One, I don’t have the money to travel. Two, I’m not leaving my mate. Three, we could run, but when would it end? At least here people are trying to solve the problem. Out there we would just be running for the rest of our lives.”

He didn’t want to look over his shoulder all the time. That was no way to live. He owed Kalan money, but it wasn’t even a large enough amount to constitute a bounty hunter. This wasn’t fair, and Viridian wasn’t going to run from something that wasn’t even his fault.

Mostly not his fault. If he hadn’t gone to that no-good fairy in the first place, none of this would even be happening.

“Well, all of that is true.” Peanut took another bite of the apple, chewing loudly. “I still think we’d be better off on our own. People around here get so testy over the smallest thing. I’m not used to being trapped in one place, and they should understand that, but I got one guy crying about me drinking all the juice in the house and leaving an empty carton in the fridge. Excuse me if I thought there was enough for the baby’s sippy cup. I got another who complains about me invading personal space or leaving my dirty dishes lying around. Jeez, you’d think in a house this size they’d have servants who cleaned up behind them. I’m not about to travel ten minutes to the kitchen to put a bowl in the sink.”

Viridian glanced at the dishwasher.
