CHAPTER 12

Without making too much noise, we head upstairs to Jamie’s room.

“Do you want to use the bathroom first?”

“Sure, if you don’t mind.” I have my travel toothbrush in my bag and I only use soap and water to clean my face since I don’t wear makeup except for special occasions like the night I went to the bar where Jamie works. “I don’t have anything to sleep in.”

“I don’t mind you naked.”

“I know you don’t. Obviously.”

Jamie goes over to the dresser and rifles through a drawer. “Shirt and shorts?”

Since his shirts practically hit my knees, I only take the shirt. It’s warm, so I don’t want to feel completely overheated while sleeping. I head to the bathroom and take a good look at myself in the mirror.

I look as exhausted as I feel, but there’s a lightness in my eyes that hasn’t been there before.

I am feeling better, having told Jamie. Keeping all these feelings inside weighed heavily on me. Nothing is going to prepare me for losing my mom. I know that. I don’t know how her death is going to hit me or what my life will be like. Before, I pushed it aside to keep on fighting, despite the doctor’s news and what my mom knew in that instinctive way of hers.

My mom is dying. I can’t fight that anymore. The only thing I can do is be there for her and make the most of the time we have left together. I don’t know what she wants, but whatever it is, I’ll do it. Instead of preparing for her death, we’ll celebrate life.

And somehow, we’ll have Christmas in July.

After I wash my face and brush my teeth, I take off my clothes, including my bra but leave my underwear on. I put on Jamie’s tee and pull my hair back into a low ponytail.

Someone knocks on the door.

I unlock it and see that it’s Jamie. “I’m done.”

“I don’t think you are,” he says and steps into the bathroom, shutting the door behind him. “Take off that shirt.”

My heart pounds, my body getting that proverbial second wind. “I’m tired. I’m not going to be good.”

“You’re not going to have to do anything.” He closes the scant distance between us, his hands landing on my hips. “I’ll make it good for you. Let me take care of you tonight.”

“With sex?”

“With sex.”

I take a step backward, pressing my back against the vanity. “What do you have in mind?”

“Take off the shirt and find out.”

I wait a moment. And another.

And then I take off my shirt, but I leave my underwear on.

“Take it all off,” Jamie says.

His words are like electrical shocks, jolting me into a higher level of wanting . . . of need. I remove my underwear, completely aware of the cotton sliding down my legs, the heat of his gaze, and the slight catch in the husky whisper, “Zelda,” when I’m fully bare.

“Spread your legs,” he says. “And one more thing? You might want to hold on to something.
