CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Shaeleen moved on ahead of Taegen trying to figure out where to go. After many minutes of apparently mindless walking, Taegen called up to Shaeleen and finally broke his silence.

“Thank you, Shaeleen,” he said, his voice soft.

Shaeleen stopped for a moment, turned around and smiled. “Thought you were gone there for a bit.”

“Me too.” Taegen stood up straighter, the fire returning to his gaze. “I thought I felt something powerful within you these past few days, but I had no idea what you could really do.”

“I did what I had to,” Shaeleen said. “I’m just glad we got away from your uncle.” She had not wanted to show Taegen the extent of her abilities—she still didn’t know if she could fully trust him or not. Her heart said to, but her mind—and she reluctantly admitted, the TruthStone—both said for her to be careful.

“I thought I was powerful. But you, Shaeleen…” Taegen paused, taking her hand in his, and gazed deep into her eyes. “You have powers that I can’t even comprehend. Who are you? What are you?”

Shaeleen was uncomfortable with his intense—and covetous—look, and she dropped his hand. Then she began walking again more quickly down the tunnel, making Taegen almost have to run to keep up as she continued again in silence.

Shaeleen herself didn’t know what she really was. She did know something about the prophecy. That she was supposed to gather all the stones and restore strength and balance to the kingdoms of Wayland. But the powers she’d exhibited against Dunstun and his ShadowStone had terrified even her. And I still have to gather the HealingStone and the HearingStone. What then? With two more stones of power, what would she not be able to do?

Shaeleen slowed a bit and let Taegen walk next to her. “As I began this errand,” Shaeleen finally said softly, “I told my brother, Cole, I would become so powerful that I could do whatever I wanted to do. I told him I would become all-powerful and make anything I wanted happen. I could ensure Basil takes the throne, I could crush Commander Kerr’s army, and I could destroy Calix if need be. Now, I also have to restore peace in Antioch, take care of the shadow keepers, and still find Diamonique.”

Taegen flinched when she mentioned the shadow keepers, but stayed listening without interrupting her.

They turned a corner, and daylight came from a small opening a dozen yards ahead of them. They walked to the opening and peered out. They were on a small ledge, about twenty-five feet above the sea.

The day was still bright, though the sun had moved considerably further west. Shaeleen blinked a few times and had to shield her eyes to look out over the Straits of Mist. Off to their left, the domes and peaks of Sylvermoor shone in the distance and Mt. Eyvindr’s snow-capped peak sat in the haze, even further to the south

Shaeleen took a deep breath and tried to calm herself. “And, do you know
