Chapter Forty-Eight

Sienna

When my roar had quieted, my rage hadn't quit. I flew up into the sky, sure that I'd seen something fake, something unreal, something staged for my benefit.

Reed couldn't be dead.

He just...couldn't be.

Flames trailed from my body like paint down the sides of a hot rod, warming the air around me as I rose into the orange-tinged sky. I scanned the seemingly endless woodlands around me, looking toward the empty lawn around the house and found something...unpleasant...waiting on the beach.

An army.

Not a large one, to be sure, but a decent number. Platoon strength in men with guns, plus a few assorted mismatches scattered at the front. I could have sworn I saw animals, too, or at least a jaguar, a lion, a tiger, and a bear. They stood in formation, awaiting me, I assumed, having delivered some countdown intended to draw me out.

Well...now I was out. And now that I was...

I locked in on them, feeling the pulsing heartbeat like a snare drum thudding in my ears. My hands were on fire, my body was on fire, my clothes burnt to embers. The giant face over the lake was gone, evaporated under the heat of my attack like a mirage vanishing as you drew close.

“Target: acquired,” came the echoing voice in the distance, across a dozen crackling speakers spread over the untold acreage of the Byerly estate.

“You can say that again,” I snarled, and thought of Gavrikov, Gavrikov, Gavrikov as I bore down on the army, and then flew at them at the speed of sound.

I was going to kill them all.
