Chapter Fourteen

As Mason walked through the lobby of his condo, he squinted against the bright reflection of the late-afternoon sun on the white marble floor. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d come home from work while the sun was still shining, other than three days ago, when Calvin, Eliza, and Grace had moved in.

That he was tonight was nothing short of a small miracle and a shit ton of determination, and in his bag was a thick stack of work to address later on, after Calvin went to bed. That inconvenience was inconsequential in the grand scheme of things, because this evening was of the utmost importance. It was what he’d been anticipating for a full week—since the day Eliza had rocked his life with the news he had a son.

Tonight, they were telling Calvin the truth about his paternity.

After securing Eliza’s agreement Monday night to stay put at his place until her duplex was livable, he’d submerged himself into work, both the ongoing crisis that threatened the company’s future and the day-to-day issues that came up. He’d thought of Calvin from time to time, Eliza too, if he was honest, but he’d barely seen them for forty-eight hours. The exception was this morning, when he’d been able to enjoy a champion’s breakfast of frozen waffles with his boy before rushing off to a day jam-packed with meetings and conference calls.

Along with a handful of other people, he walked into the elevator, hit the button for the top floor, and turned to face the doors. As he did, a woman—Eliza, he realized—came whipping around the corner and scrambling toward the elevators.

“Hold the elevator, please!”

He stuck his hand out to stop the doors from closing and took in her appearance as she rushed forward without making eye contact. In one hand was her fiddle case and from the other shoulder hung a large canvas bag. She wore a loose sleeveless fuchsia top, cropped jeans, and shoes that turned the outfit from girl-next-door to eye-catching—heeled sandals with three bands that wrapped around her ankles in a hue that matched her shirt.

What caught his attention even more than the sexy shoes, though, were the fatigue and stress etched across her face.

Her head down as she fumbled with her phone, Eliza hopped on, apparently still not noticing it was him.

“Thank you,” she said. When she finally looked up at him, recognition registered and her smile became less forced.

“You’re welcome.”

As the elevator began its ascent, Eliza took in a deep breath and let it out slowly, almost inaudibly, and Mason likely wouldn’t have been aware of it if he hadn’t been tuned in. It was a weary breath, as if she carried the weight of the world on her shoulders.

The desire to help her shoulder that burden or, better yet, carry it for her washed over him.

“Something wrong?” he asked quietly.

“I’m late. My car wouldn’t start when I came out of the studio. Grace has a gig at six, so she needed to leave fifteen minutes ago.
