Years after the maternity home was shut down, a handyman by the name of Glen Shatford revealed what had happened to the murdered babies. Some were stashed in butter boxes obtained from a local grocer and buried in a field owned by Lila Young’s mother. (When the case eventually broke in the media they’d be dubbed the “Butterbox Babies.”) Others were tossed into the sea or incinerated in a furnace at the home.

Lila Young alone decided which baby would live and which would die. She’d wander through the ward inspecting her “stock” with a practiced eye. Any infant that did not meet her definition of quality was sectioned off and murdered.
