TWO

Could the officer hear the fear in her voice? Did he recognize who she was? She didn’t even know which one of her colleagues the cop was or even if he was someone she’d personally worked with. Since the mugger had knocked her glasses off, the cop was nothing but a very large blur to her, with a snarling and barking blob at his feet.

“Last warning!” The officer’s voice boomed. It was familiar and spoke of protection and strength. “Drop the weapon and let her go, or I’m unleashing the dog. I’ll give you to the count of three. One.”

“Don’t do it!” the criminal shouted.

Danielle closed her eyes.

“Two!” The cop’s voice sounded.

“I’ll shoot her! I mean it!”

Save me, Lord!

“Three!”

A bullet ripped the air beside her head; it took her a breath to realize the mugger fired past her toward the dog. Barking echoed deafeningly around her. The mugger let her body go and yanked her tote bag from her shoulder, so fiercely she felt her knees buckle beneath her. A bolt of fur and fury shot past her. She tumbled to the ground. A pair of strong and warm hands reached for her, one taking her arm and the other supporting her back. She gasped a breath, willing her wobbly legs to please stop shaking long enough to let her stand. Barking faded in the distance.

“Hey, Danielle, it’s okay.” The officer’s voice surrounded her, gentle, strong and above all reassuring. “He’s gone. You’re safe.”

She knew that voice. Officer Teddy Kowalski? The face that swam before her eyes was a soft blur, but the sound of his voice rang a bell somewhere deep in her core along with the memory of a tall and broad man, with a kind and shy grin, whose determined dog had dragged him past her desk six times in the past four days looking for pats and treats. She looked up at the cop who now held her in his arms. “Teddy?”

“Yeah.” A smile filled his voice. “Yeah, it’s me. I’ve got you.”

“It was just a random mugging.” She wasn’t sure if she was saying that out loud for his benefit or to reassure herself. “I was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

“Mm-hmm. Now, let’s get you back up on your feet.”

Well, that had been a noncommittal sound if she’d ever heard one. She reached for him and gripped his strong arms with her gloved hands as he helped her to stand. “Where’s Garfunkel?”

Teddy chuckled slightly. The gentle laugh seemed to envelope her. “He took off after the guy.”

“Shouldn’t you go after him?” she asked.

“Yeah, but I’m not just going to leave you here alone. Are you okay? Did he hurt you?”

“I’m fine,” she said. “He just took my tote bag.”

She raised her chin, hating as she did so to realize how much it was quivering. Her voice was coming out shaking and squeaky too. Come on, Danielle! She was a New Yorker. It hadn’t been personal. The mugger hadn’t known who she was or targeted her personally.
