“It’s so blue,” Ivory said, leaning against the railing. Tripp joined her, one arm slipping easily around her waist. Everything with Tripp was easy—except navigating their sleeping arrangements. He’d booked the Norwegian suite on the ship, and it actually had two twin mattresses they could push together and convert into a king-sized bed.

They hadn’t done that, but the four feet between them felt very close and yet extremely far away.

“I think it’s beautiful,” he said.

“It is.” She leaned into his body, appreciating the warmth from him. While it was summertime, the temperatures this far north were still quite cool to her. Especially compared to Texas.

“What’s been your favorite part of the cruise?” he asked.

“The blue whales,” she said immediately. “I’ve never seen anything like that.” And she hadn’t. The day the ship had come across two whales had opened her eyes to a whole new world.

He smiled out at all the water, also something that intrigued her. “I liked the whales too,” he said. “I think I liked that band that played the first night.”

“Really?” she teased. “You’re going to go with a band when we’re surrounded by glaciers and mountains that rise right out of the ocean?” She pushed against his chest, laughing. “That’s just lame.”

He laughed with her. “I also liked that key lime pie they have on the buffet. Good thing we have one more dinner on this ship. I might eat only pie tonight.”

“Yeah, and then I’ll have to listen to you complain about how sick you are all night long.” She rolled her eyes. The man certainly liked food, and he could eat a lot.

“I haven’t complained,” he said. “Not even one night.”

“No, you just toss and turn and groan.”

He stepped away from her and leaned his hip against the side of the boat, looking fully at her now. “You’re awake for that?”

She shrugged, because she didn’t want him to know she couldn’t fall asleep until he did. “Sometimes.”

“I’ve talked to you, and you haven’t responded.”

“Maybe I didn’t hear you.”

“Maybe?” He cocked his eyebrows at her.

“I think I heard you say one night that you wished you hadn’t eaten three pieces of chocolate cake.”

Tripp’s eyes danced, and oh, Ivory loved this game. So she was completely unprepared when he said, “Yeah, and last night, I said I hoped you could fall in love with me too.” He swept his gaze back out over the open water. “Did you hear that?”

Yes, she’d heard him say that. Her first instinct was to deny it. But her voice said, “Yes.”

“How are you feeling?” he asked. “If I can be so bold as to ask. You never really…say anything about how you feel.”

Tremors shook her body, and the breeze coming off the water now felt like a gale. “Uh, I’m….”

Falling in love with you.

She’d said it once. He hadn’t heard her. Could she say it again?

“I think I’m falling in love with you,” she said, the words barely meeting her own ears. “But I’m scared, and I just need to go slow.
