LENNON

“Do you think it’d be on the cover of a magazine? Like, oh my God, would Sports Illustrated do a story?”

I’m surprised she knows the name of an actual sports magazine. “You’ve lost your damn mind.”

Mom snickers to herself as Palmer rambles on like Led Zeppelin, but I can see there’s more spinning through her brain that she’s not saying. She’s all smiles for Palmer, but nothing but dirty looks when it comes to me. Moms always know way more than they should.

She knows me too well.

“I think they would. It’d be breaking news all over the world.”

“Yeah, you’ll be on the cover of SI with a backlight illuminating you in your glorious wedding gown for the world to see. It’ll sell out in hours. Lines around the block to get it like a new iPhone.” I look in the rearview mirror grinning.

Palmer scowls. “You don’t have to be a dick.”

Mom let’s out a sigh.

I ignore it. “What do you want me to say? You met him for two seconds and you’re planning your wedding and expect me to take it seriously?” A horrid feeling eats at my gut, like it has the entire time since she met Owen. It all just felt—wrong, and I know it’s the source of my mother’s silence, even though she told me to give in and let Palmer meet him.

“Well, whatever. We’ll be on all the gossip channels. How much money does he make? He’s rich, so we’ll have a giant wedding for sure. Not that it would matter either way. He could be a plumber and I’d be all about that.”

Mom rolls her eyes.

“His new contract will be enormous. Probably the largest of all time. One of the reasons I really need to make him my client.”

“Don’t worry.” She leans forward, patting my shoulder. “I’ll make sure you get him. See? My idea was perfect. I get to fall madly in love, and you get to build your agency empire or whatever you call it.” She waves a hand forward, then falls back on her seat, sighing like she’s smitten with Owen. “Happily ever after for everyone.”

I try to laugh, but it probably sounds more like I’m being strangled. My skin is crawling the way she’s talking about all this. It’s not right. I do believe she has good intentions. I think she really does like Owen and she wants what’s best for me, but it’s hard. It wasn’t supposed to be like this. Tripp sat there and watched it all unfold too.

Mom definitely knows what I’m feeling, what I allowed to happen, and continue to be discussed. She’s practically radiating disappointment next to me.

I don’t know what she wants from me. All I did was introduce them.

Yes, justify it.

I even dragged her away before things could go further. I think that should earn me at least a little bit of understanding, but it’s clear my mother feels otherwise. She saw the pressure I was under. She was the one who told me to me to take Palmer down there so she could watch the precious baseball game in peace.
