Letter No. 1

Dear Nobomi,

Lerato still pretends to smoke cigarettes, even though she’s had a surgical procedure on her throat: a tonsillectomy, to be exact. This afternoon, as the two of us walked down the corridor from math toward Huberta Square, she told me she was leaving. Her dad’s moving them to East London, and she’ll go to Clarendon.

I asked her if she was sure. I told her I’d miss her.

Me too, she said.

Then I helped her pack her locker. I gave her Dad’s pencil case.

Letter No. 2

Dear Nobomi,

I went to the Olympiad and it felt different without Kiran. I admit that. I walked around the fields afterward, until a group of seniors jeered at me from the clubhouse. I ignored them. Later, waiting for the transport to take me back to King, I made out with a boy named Lee. I didn’t take his number, but I remember he was from Graff Reinet.
