The Answer Is… A SINGLE STEP

When I came to America in 1973, the first thing that struck me, the first thing I noticed, is that it is one of the greatest therapeutic societies on the face of the earth. What I mean by therapeutic is this: a monster flood hits, a hurricane hits, a tornado hits, and we muster all of our services, all of our help, and we deal with that problem lickety-split. We’re on it fast. But we’re not a prophylactic society. We don’t take steps beforehand to protect against problems that may come up. We wait for the shit to hit the fan, and then we act. We do not act beforehand. And that has always disappointed me about the United States. We have a perfect example of the consequences of this with the coronavirus.

We’re seeing this also with global warming. Nineteen of the hottest years recorded on earth have occurred since 2001. These are facts, not fiction. For people to deny global warming is beyond me. The planet is in trouble. It didn’t happen overnight. It’s taken 150 years to get to where we are today. So, we’re not going to remedy the problem in just a year or two. But we have to do something about it. Take coal: When you mine coal, you pollute the earth. When you burn coal, you pollute the earth. So you get a double dose of pollution from coal. I experienced this kind of pollution growing up in Sudbury. The fact that we’re still doing it eighty years later is absolutely baffling to me.

There is a famous Chinese proverb: “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” And that’s what we need to do: take that single step so that future generations of Americans, our descendants, will be able to look back at us and say, “You know what? Our grandparents had some tough decisions to make. But because they made those decisions, the world is a better place in which to live and a safer one too.”
