I blinked, bright light almost blinding me and I closed my eyes against the glare. I must have made some noise because a hand settled on my face.
âCrew?â Sloanâs soft voice prompted me to open my eyes again, this time keeping them open as she blocked the source of the light. âHey, welcome back to the land of the living.â
I groaned lightly. âFigured I wasnât dead if you were here.â
She gave me a bemused glance. âIs that a compliment?â
âI expected to be somewhere hotter if I was dead,â I replied, my eyes trying to close again. I took a deep breath, wincing when it sent pain shooting down my side. âDrea?â I managed and Sloanâs gaze shifted to the corner of the room. I lifted my head enough to see her propped against the wall, dark hair covering her face. My head plopped back on the table as my breath gusted out of me, unexpectedly glad she was still there.
Sloan hummed, brushing my hair back off my forehead. âI wonât ask, but she refused to say anything other than her name.â A smile flickered on my lips. That sounded like her. âYour brothers were fit to be tied.â My smile widened and I heard her laugh. âYou want me to get her?â
I shook my head, too quickly because the room swam. âNo,â I said thickly, swallowing. âLet her sleep.â
âLet me get you some water,â she said, hurrying out of the room. I turned my head as the door closed behind her and Drea looked at me, lifting her finger to her lips. I nodded and she crept to me.
âYouâre okay?â She whispered worriedly and I dipped my head, but the worry didnât leave her eyes.
âIâm fine,â I murmured and she grimaced.
âYouâre not fine,â she whispered sharply. âYou got shot.â She bit down on her lip, hard enough to draw blood and I raised my arm to reach for her. âNo,â she said, shaking her head as she pushed my arm back down. âYou got shot because of me. Because that bastard recognized me.â I heard the disgust in her voice as she swallowed. âI have to go,â she said abruptly, squeezing my hand.
âWhy?â I asked, tightening my hand around hers when it seemed like she wasnât going to answer. âWhy?â I insisted and she kneeled next to me.
âIâm DEA,â she admitted and I closed my eyes for a long second. âYeah, I canâtâ¦.I wonât turn you in.â She chewed on her lip as I looked at her again. âYou werenât there, okay?â She nodded to herself. âI will protect you, but you have to promise me,â she glanced at the door and then back to me, âDonât go after Monty.â
I made an automatic sound of disagreement and she ducked her head. âCrew, I promise he will pay. Iâll make sure he goes back to prison, but I canât protect you if you go after him.â
My eyes narrowed and I licked my dry lips. âGo back to prison,â I repeated, my mind catching on that phrase.
