CHAPTER 19

BRAX

I had expected Trevor to continue telling me all the reasons I was not ready to be his Daddy. He’d worked up a head of steam in the living room and by the time he’d ordered me to his room, I had known he was ready to list every single one of them. That all changed when I asked what his toy was.

I’d been curious. It hadn’t been a ruse to distract him. He’d been so engrossed in it that I knew he had to like it. When I saw it still on the ground, I’d had to ask about it. Instead of telling me what it was, he’d shown me, but he’d also gotten sidetracked by it.

He’d finished the rainbow and had let it dry while drawing a house and car under it. When the color had evaporated, he filled the space with a tree and birds. The entire time he worked, his feet wiggled happily. I took the time while he was distracted to poke around his room a bit.

Trevor certainly loved art. From Play-Doh, to clay, to markers, to crayons, he had a section for everything. He also seemed to have an affinity for soft things, from blankets, to pillows, to stuffed animals. Everywhere I looked, something soft was tucked on a shelf, on a chair, or along the wall.

By the door, there was a box that was out of place compared to the rest of the organized room. The top was opened and I looked inside, not knowing what to expect. Knowing what I did about Trevor already, it shouldn’t have surprised me that there were kids’ plates, more sippy cups and bottles, and little forks and spoons. I didn’t want to dig around in it and scare him, but I was pretty sure I saw a few pacifiers in there as well.

I wanted to tell Easton that I’d found a boy, but I wasn’t sure that Trevor had actually agreed to be my boy. He’d basically agreed to show me why I wasn’t prepared to be his Daddy. What he hadn’t figured out yet was that I didn’t care about what he liked to play with when he was little, or what being little meant to him. I was attracted to him, little side and all.

Once I’d had a chance to fully explore the room, I stood in the doorway for a few minutes watching him color. He’d once again become fully immersed in it. His hand reaching for a blanket reminded me that his blanket and Huck were still in the living room and once I got there, I remembered his cup. He hadn’t taken a sip of it before he’d launched into his list of reasons we couldn’t work.

There were things we hadn’t talked about. I knew he hadn’t told me everything before he’d gotten distracted by his toys. Halfway back to Trevor’s playroom, I heard a buzzing against something hard. A pat down of my shorts told me I’d left my phone somewhere, likely the kitchen.
